Seems weird that you think someone is a bum because they don't share same values as you. I would think that someone who works hard, is a leader and commits to his community and family is far from a bum - Canada Cup
If your ultimate goal isn't to win a cup you're a bum. |

Good enough to give a long contract? I wouldn't - Canada Cup
we agree 100%. man he gets so much slack on here. look at gardiner; that's kadri if you commit long term unless his production jumps...it's actually been declining every year since the short year.
and his game may be 'improving' defensively, but how could it not when it was non existent |

i was saying i believed they were tanking before the season on purpose. Kept the same core, signed scraps. kept same coach etc. we finished bottom 8 last year and signed the bottom of the barrel UFAs..i do fully believe shanny was trying to tank and still is. just not so obvious about it; but come on he kept the same team with a few tinkers that sucked for 3 of the previous 4 seasons. a full rebuild IS coming. - clark_griswold
Just wasn't as bad as Buffalo. Everyone knew they were tanking. What a roster. |

On Free Agent Frenzy days, would you rather have a $5M Cody Franson, or a $5M Brooks Orpik?
Hate to break it to your leaf haters, but Franson is exactly the type of player you want running your powerplay. His shot gets through, and it can also be tipped.
Off the powerplay, he generally plays effective minutes.
On a better team, with better systems, and a better partner paired with him, he would actually look pretty good - ILoveLamp
can say that about every bloody one of them

Rumours are he wants Mason Raymond money. For a team that is now said to be rebuilding probably better to get the pick for him now. - Aaron_85

maybe we could freeze Santorelli and bring him back in 4 or 5 years. He would be much more valuable to leafs then...Perfect role guy a contending team. So unfortunately now he must go |

don't think he was lobbying to keep him, just defending his value... which is quite high, even with several other dmen out there.
there are still more teams shopping for Dmen than there are Dmen available, |

Hope your right... If I'm betting, they move out 3 or 4 guys but I doubt too much gets done by the deadline... Kessel on the 4th might also be a way to make him be more willing to waive to a team he at the current moment doesn't want to play for, make him uncomfortable so he is willing, could be possible... |

I think just the UFAs and 1 contract gone at the deadline. So 3-4 guys, just as you say. |

Like I said yesterday, it is very clear they are testing individual players metal, seeing how they react and how they play upon coming back, I think this is all part of a plan to weed out who they feel might still have some character, and bump the rest, I don't believe this will be a full tear down... - aminnes
If they trade Phaneuf and Kessel for picks and prospects, it's pretty close to a full teardown.

I'd be extremely happy if the Leafs traded Lupul, Franson, Winnik and Santorelli at the deadline for draft picks. |

kinda hard to do more than that.
Even the globe article makes it pretty clear they likely can't move Kessel and Phaneuf now, and understandably. Those are big deals with a lot of moving parts to make the cap work. |

Agree. If we are going into rebuild mode, none of these players should stay. UFAs should be traded, and big contracts like Kessel and Phaneuf should be moved.
I'd keep Kadri and Holland for now, as you do need NHL centres to play while, until your drafted centres are able to develop naturally into the role. No need to rush them.
Nylander and Rielly should be pieces to build with.
And that's about it. I'd maybe keep one of the goalies, as you don't want to throw a young goalie onto a developing team. If the goalie falters, so does the confidence of the younger players in front of them. If the team falters, a better goalie should be there to help bail them out. |
