Clarkson's job is to hope to refund his game so that he doesn't colossally suck next year.

Kessel will be top 10 in scoring next year - probably wearing a different sweater.

IMO management (Owners) think that they have a duty of care to not be bad on purpose, IE trading current players for futures and drafting at the high end because the tickets are so expensive. Problem is in doing so they've managed to be terrible for years and not make improvements.
