Serious though. Are we talking like Jake Gardiner 3 years ago type guys?
Matt Frattin pre-knee injury types? - TheThrill
that's what the focus should be...or picks....gardiner gets ripped on but prospects rarely turn out and he is still potentially a very good player.
if it's me..im going 21 or under and/or picks. I firmly believe it will be 5-7 years. Say what you want..it's not gonna be easy. We are in a terrible situation cap wise and our returns won't be pretty. It's gonna be longgggg |

Yea, I think the Leafs could have gotta Kane, Bogo, etc for Kessel straight up. Woulda been an interesting trade. - Feeling Glucky?
we need younger players than those guys. not that theyre dinos, but we need like 21 under types. |

it's funny how some on here want to keep alot of this team. Not saying they're wrong...just wondering how many times you can watch the same thing fail over and over.
The MSM has been right in this - they have needed a full rebuild. It was management that always chose to retool. - clark_griswold a
Which is why maybe Nonis gets a bum rap. He very well might have wanted to trade some of those players mentioned earlier for picks but didn't have ownership on board for a rebuild. Now they do.
I will not be surprised if Nonis keeps his job at the end of the year.

there's so many details though. kessel (as much as i make fun of him) is WAY better than kane. however, buffalo really wanted kane as his cap is 6 but the actual money paid decreases every year. I believe (could be wrong) it gets down to like 3 mil and 2 mil by the end of the deal. that's key for buffalo - keep the cap high (6 mil) but contract dollars low.
Who knows what kessel gets.....but....safe to say we don't come within a galaxy of a seguin/hamilton. I know that's not technically what we gave up...but point is the kessel trade turned out HORRIBLY wrong (and that's not discounting that he probably did better here than expected). Just the leafs luck eh? - clark_griswold
good points yes.. but Kessel is also signed longer.. Kane will get another deal in 2018..which will be more than kessel is now I am sure
Also.. i dont consider the Kessel trade as Horrible..bad timing and not what was needed yes.. things haven't worked out.. but thats on management.. they are the ones who have failed Phil and the fans.
the kessel trade could have worked out fine if they actually build the team with him properly |

Mr. Shanahan and his lieutenants have now finally received a broad mandate from ownership to scorch as much earth as they see fit in order to return the Leafs to contention, according to two sources familiar with that meeting. It will mean a new philosophy on building slowly through the draft and long-term projects, rather than quick fixes via trades for established players. It will mean at least three more years of pain for fans, and as many as five….
This season has allowed management to identify a new core of players it wants to keep – Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, Jonathan Bernier, William Nylander. Nazem Kadri and James van Riemsdyk are still considered valuable because of their youth. There are some favourites, but no one – not even a budding star such as Mr. Rielly – is untouchable.
It won’t happen until summer, but Mr. Phaneuf and Mr. Kessel are not in the plan. The goal now is extracting as much value as possible for them. That translates either to young players who are high-ceiling projects and draft picks.
- Colin Dambrauskas
It starts with those two, they are the main core, then you have Bozak, Lupul, Gardiner and JVR in the next group. |

As long as it's done correctly and eventually will be a good team, I can very much handle 5 years of losing terribly.
I mean, they lose anyway. At least this way, we know it's coming.
My son is 8 months old. By the time he is able to really watch and understand the game with his dear old dad, they will be good. This, I can live with |

i agree with you 100% on all points. kessel's contract could get real ugly though.
As for kane..wouldn't take him for free on my team. |

I'd keep Reilly.
I'd keep Kadri.
I'd publicly state that Gardiner is part of our rebuild, but that would only be to extract the highest price possible for him.
Everything else would be sitting on the table on my driveway with the prices written on them on a little piece of masking tape.
And it looks like we are running Kessel out of town. Glad to see one of the best scorers in the league isn't good enough for us fans.

Contrary to popular belief, fans don't actually make the trades. Nor do GMs make the trades BASED ON WHAT FANS WANT.
So it actually looks like the Leafs are running Kessel out of town, el capitano. |

While my response to this would usually be that they shoulda kept Burke, the news that Shanahan convinced mlse to do a full rebuild is actually pretty exciting, and I doubt Burke woulda done that |

kessel is a different animal. He's been discussed enough on these boards. Point is he'll be gone.
i keep rielly no doubt. He's a beauty. Nylander unless you get a potentially as good centre. Wingers are the least important IMO. Build around stud centres and D, and we already have 1 in Rielly.
Kadri i don't care for; and i'd move (for the right price) but you have valid points in keeping him. It's just preference. |

Well if the Jets had that kind of interest in Kessel, why didn't they? Also, if they have that kind of interest, why not make a play for him now?
They have 2 1sts this year to play with.......plus? |

the Jets don't want kessel? you just said three minutes ago the leafs could have gotten kane, bogo, etc for him. so they'd trade for a player they don't want?
and the leafs don't want to move kessel? good lord this is worse than I thought. |

Well thats what I mean....there's no chance the Leafs could have had Kane and Bogo for Kessel if the Jets have no interest.....but now that I think about it, the Jets are one of the few teams that I see a fit for Kessel. |

I'd take Myers, one of the 1st, a 2nd, and Hutchison for Kessel, Winnik, Reimer. They're loaded up on defense as it is. They've been said to be looking for a depth guy for this years playoffs. That deal probably makes them a little more competitive for a solid run this year. |

The funny thing is, I was the worst one.
When my brother and I were at the games, we would scream "Larry Alert! Larry Alert!" whenever he would touch the puck.
Boy oh boy were we ever funny guys. Because we knew far more about playing hockey than Larry Murphy - I don't mean to brag or anything, but I won more than a couple of house league championships over the years.
What the hell did Larry Murphy ever win? |
