Phaneuf, in the right deal can bring back a 1st.
- Mr_Smokey

the right deal doesn't include a brittle aging scorer for a young potentially star forward with size

FWIW, Steve Simmons wrote a similar article earlier this week.

So did our very own Walshy. Walshy has more insider accuracy than Simmons.

I think that his wife wrote it and put his name on it.

Just like Nonis. Any good move is Shanny's doing....

Simmons has opinions usually different than most people for the sake of being different. I have to listen to him sometimes when tuning into TSN radio.

He actually thought signing Franson NOW is better than a 2nd rounder because it only gives a 23% chance of getting a top 6 forward or top 4 D in 4 years.

Yet, he doesn't seem to understand Franson stops us from winning in the next four years anyway and then he's crap and walks as UFA or retires.

Where to start... well Lupul and Toffoli both have size. Toffoli is going to be a star now? You've ascertained that with his 100 NHL games? Lupul is 31, not exactly old. The only thing you're right about is him being brittle.

the only first he's bringing back is the first pick in the second or third round.

whether 31 is old or not, it's defeinitely "aging". it's an age where a player is reaching the end of his prime, if he's even still in it. between that, his injury history and his contract, his value is not high. you're certainly not getting a 22 year old on pace for nearly 30 goals.

in terms of player personnel? i highly doubt that. he is in no way qualified to have any say in that. personnel should be left up to Nonis, Dubas and Hunter. that's the management team. the president's job is to put together a management team, not micromanage player personnel.

there's all this talk about Babcock but IMO the best thing for the Leafs would be for them to remove Nonis, install a GM with full autonomy and have the assistants report directly to him. you need one person with the responsibility of putting the hockey club together. committees are trouble.

my post stated exactly what you are saying..shanny has a lot of connections and help around him to make these big decisions on players..ie Dubas,Hunter..plus friends like Rob Blake ect..........

my assumption is that he brings in a qualified head honcho this summer the way Burke did with Treliving and Linden did with Benning.

Ageing is open to anyones interpretation. A 31 year old player is not old in my opinion. And An almost 30 goal pace isn't 30 goals and it means nothing until you see how many he finishes with. Maybe 20/25...

I think regardless of what happens with Nonis, we are in for a pretty bad couple years.

We are all on board with tanking and shedding as much of this dead weight as we can. the reality is that we are going to get very little that is exciting or interesting in return. Draft picks aren't going to keep us entertained for at least a few years.

If they do this right, I think I am going to have to pick a new team to cheer for for a while.
