so if Nonis isn't in long term plans and I cant see an scenario he is..Why is he allowed to have any say right now? The rest of the crew can make the decisisons as a group right now - Popcorn Kid
That article is pretty interesting in that it suggests that Nonis and Shanny were both of the opinion that the team couldn't sustain wins playing the way it did (and presumably with the current core).

then why even keep him around? and more importantly, what's shanahan's track record as far as rebuilding a team from the ground up?!? - dt99999
Between firing Carlyle and the circus that's covering them,I believe shanny is keeping things quiet for now..No-nuts won't be here next year and he knows it..it makes no sense letting a guy who has no future here make life defining changes (in leaf land) when he had no invested interest ,,shanny has a lot of connections and help around him to make these big decisions on players |

I think shanny is making the decisions (quietly) and Nonis is just a face now, nothing more - Daddichronic
in terms of player personnel? i highly doubt that. he is in no way qualified to have any say in that. personnel should be left up to Nonis, Dubas and Hunter. that's the management team. the president's job is to put together a management team, not micromanage player personnel.
there's all this talk about Babcock but IMO the best thing for the Leafs would be for them to remove Nonis, install a GM with full autonomy and have the assistants report directly to him. you need one person with the responsibility of putting the hockey club together. committees are trouble. |

oh ya im sure that was a long conversation.
Shanahan: Dave i don't think this is sustainable. What's your take?
Nonis: I agree with everything you ever say.
Shanahan: Good. Good. |

Kelly is well connected with the Board so this is good news. - The Law
Didn't know that. Might explain the air of authority in that article. So used to non-commital passive tone of guys like Dreger and Fat Head: "it is a possibility..." "some would argue" and "it is believed to be" in everything they write. |

Toffoli is a younger, better and infinitely more durable forward than Lupul so that's a no and I don't see any team doling out a 1st for Phaneuf. - dt99999

It's not a Toffoli vs Lupul situation... and no Toffoli at this point is not better than Lupul, that's idiotic but yes he's far more durable.
The trade is about LA getting a top 4 D they need badly and a vet forward for the playoffs. |

Being a former player, with no high-level strategic experience, my gut is he's very much a hands-on kind of a guy and he probably can't help himself. Either that or he's completely hands-off and more of a figure head.
Bottom line is, I'm not 100% sold on this front office until Nonis is gone. |

1. I'm not sure Shanahan has made the decision to move him. There is nobody with NHL GM experience on staff (except Cliff when he's awake) and Shanahan may want to see how things work with the new management team in place.
2. Why not wait till others become available or when there is time to work a new guy in. |

Toffoli is better, younger, cheaper and more durable.
The trade would look more like Toffoli + Richards for Phaneuf + Lupul and even then, the cap doesn't work.

Either way. It confirms he's now on board with doing things the Shanny-way or he gets canned. They've re-distributed the scouting duties. They've presumably removed the "need" to sign high profile UFA's. They've given the mandate to sell the old core for young assets/picks. I could care less if Nonis is still an employee going forward. It's the change in philosophy that was critical for this team. |

I think he's doing the right things - putting a strong team in place. I'm not sure he would bother if he was going to micro-manage the whole thing |
