I actually don't think this is a bad move at all for Buffalo. They got the two guys with the highest potential in the trade. Definitely assume a ton of risk with Bogo's injuries and Kane's attitude, but If either of them reach max potential, they'll win this trade.
- PhillySportsGuy

What if Myers reaches his max potential and the Jets draft a player in the first round that winds up better then Kane?

Each team gave up assets it could afford. Buffalo gave up one of three first rounders, likely a pick in the twenties. They have a very good and deep system, so they could give up good prospects like Armia and Lemieux. To me, Myers and Bogosian is a wash, so it boils down to Stafford and the pick/prospects for Kane.

You're allotted a certain number of protections to use on your roster. Somewhere between 12 and 15 I think. G Jake Mase would be some obvious protections. Everyone else is fair game to be drafted. Its unlikely Vinny or RJ would get taken though.

The kicker tho, NMCs remain intact. Meaning someone could draft Vinny but its up to him whether he wants to go there or not.

Had to look it up.

When Columbus & Minnesota joined the NHL 26(Atlanta & Nashville were exempt) of the 28 teams existing in the league at the time of the draft were each allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards.

For teams protecting only one goaltender, there was no experience requirement for those left unprotected. For teams protecting two goaltenders, each goaltender left unprotected must have appeared in either 10 NHL games in the 1999–2000 season or 25 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. A goaltender had to be in net for at least 31 minutes in each game for the game to be counted against these totals.

At least one defenceman left unprotected by each team had to have appeared in at least 40 games in the 1999–2000 season or 70 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. At least two forwards left unprotected by each team had to have met the same requirements. Exempt from the Expansion Draft are all first and second-year pros & unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned).

That rule will likely change, because at the time, NHL teams held European draftee rights until age 31, IIRC.

Buffalo so clearly making moves to not compete for the rest of the year. Do we see someone follow suit? Arizona maybe?

I wish.

I think Arizona's GM will go through with the fire sale. I'd imagine he'd be quite pissed to be picking yet another D man at 3.

I'll be happy to swap him AMac and L Schenn for Yandle and OEL

Certainly, you have to think Vermette gets moved -- he's 32 now. It feels like just yesterday he came into the league.

And certainly, they can pull the chute on the Keith Yandle Era, too.

But really, when you look at their roster, they're about as close to stripped as you can get. You can move Ekman-Larsson, but that would be about as ridiculous a thing I've seen done in my time watching this sport.

I don't know what they want for Yandle, but if they're going to do it, they have to understand that with his salary, the bidders are limited and the returns will not be astronomical -- enough to certainly help a rebuilding team, but all their years of failing to attract, draft or develop offensive help is going to hurt them, because now they absolutely have to pay through the nose for it, much like the Flyers have had to for defensemen
