not to mention his late-game ice-time with the team down a goal

But if it's a bubble team, it means they're close to the playoffs and thus higher draft pick and little/no lottery odds. Trading them any of the Sabres "good" players would improve that team and thus have them push higher in the standings, lowering the value of the 1st rounder coming back.
- stashu

That is the theory, but if they fall apart, then you win. So we should trade the Ducks for their first, which looks be 26+ now and just get it over with? I would trade for the team with the chance at the pick being a lottery pick, that is all.

then signs with us in JULY

entire NHL cries tampering

We have the most cap room and he will now has ties here. So you never know. But anything more than 2 years is scary with him (to me).

would you agree to an opinion that the vanek trades were just short of disasterous (considering they finished 5th from the bottom,) but that snow made a helluva comeback in the off season? (maybe getting a little lucky with boychuk and leddy?)
- Michael Pachla

Well I don't know what you mean by lucky? That they were available or that he got them? Either way I think he got them without giving up much at all and I have a hard time believing that there weren't other teams involved in trying to get the both of them so I'd have a hard time calling it luck. I'd say he did a damn good job getting two great players at a reasonable price and that's coming from someone who is not a fan of Snow.

As far as the Vanek trade being disastrous I'll say his inaction after the trade is what made that deal bad more than anything. He shouldn't have stopped there when the team obviously needed defense and goaltending. Maybe he tried and failed I'm not going to make pretend i know but either way he didn't fill the teams needs and that's his job. Moulson wasn't getting resigned which i was 100% on board with. I was never a fan of him as any Islander fan on our board could tell you giving up a first and second is to me an overpayment to an extent for a MAYBE rental but in the end it worked out(meaning he didn't sign thankfully! lol). It was a risk and Snow was probably under the impression he could get him signed for some reason? We got two picks in the 1st round in the last draft both of which are good players IMO so it's not a huge loss in the end.

I'd love to have a first this yr but it won't set back this club in any way moving fwd IMO so calling it disastrous is tough because most trades are looked at how they affect the team over a period of time not immediate results and i don't see it as having any long term negative effects or positive for that matter. We lost a first and a second on a calculated risk that didn't work. It happens. I will say I would have rather those assets have been traded for defense or a goaltender not Vanek.

I love this response! If you are willing to overpay a player (after trading them the deadline before), who's at fault? The team? There was no guarantee he would be available, cause once traded, that team can offer him a deal and he may take it.

This is what a smart franchise owner does.

A STATEMENT FROM OWNER TERRY PEGULA:
"I personally met with Richie, along with Doug Whaley, Rex Ryan and Kim regarding an opportunity to earn a spot on the Buffalo Bills roster. Obviously, we all discussed Richie's past experience in the NCAA and NFL. We are convinced that Richie is prepared to move forward and has and will continue to take the necessary steps to improve himself as a person and a teammate. Following discussion with the rest of the coaching staff, we as an organization will provide him with the opportunity to do so."

My guess is Winnipeg and Vancouver are dancing around an offer that includes Horvat, Kassian and a #1 for Kane. They may not be exactly at that point, but they are close. I still believe ( hope) Ottawa will be in the mix with an offer that could include Lazar, Lehner and a #2 pick.

Winnipeg has no interest in Dmen. They have probably the best young D in the league after Nashville. I think Buffalo has the pieces to get a deal done. But it will cost a lot more than most of the proposals being formulated on this thread.

I am a huge believer in the Kane myth. I was certain he would play on Crosby's wing at the Olympics as Canada's top power forward. He is only 23 and I think he breaks out on his next team no matter where he goes.

The last time insiders were so sure about a guy needing a new start was Chris Pronger at Hartford. It just got too hard to fix. Everyone understood he was a future franchise talent.

IMO, Foligno and Kassian hold about the same value. Same age and type of player.

One plays with the Sedins the other doesn't

Foligno, 1st + another good piece would be a starter offer. I would assume WPG counters and so on and so on.

Vancouver first is higher though, then what we would give and I doubt Vancouver does that deal before trading deadline (not getting any roster players back for their playoff run). If a team trades their first rounder, they better be making a run towards /in the playoffs.

Murray should exhaust all his resources to make this deal happen.

Take on additional unwanted cap hits from other players on the Jets? Swapping more picks in later rounds?

If Murray can walk away on trade deadline day and have Kane, I think he wins the day. All Sabres fans want to move away all UFA's, but if we gave up all UFA's and a roster player, a prospect and (1) late 1st in 2015, we will all be happy. We have such a deep pool right now that having more picks / prospects does not help much, just need to get the stud players.

Isles were not lucky by the cap squeeze bc every other team had there chance also....

Snow thought 1 player was going to give an impact of making PO's but all knew there were other bigger holes that needed to be filled, so to the fans, we had no expectations of PO's bc most were aware of glaring needs, maybe Snow thought the team was capable of making PO's w/just 1 addition.....???
