rferrone actually watched him play live, so he's got a bit of merit here. The bad skating knocks are based of 3 or 4 year old scouting reports on McIlrath from the draft. - rangerdanger94
Or the game against the blues this year, where fought once and took bad penalties because beaten to a spot. Also how could we get him(and the rest of the pk) getting undressed by Tarasenko. Mcilrath had his chance to show managemnt and the coaches that he belonged. They sen't him back the next day.
At best he could become douglas Murray, I think he's more of Matt Carkner. |

The St.Louis game is a poor example, his partner in that game was Kostka and Tarasenko got by a few ranger players first and caught him flat footed, including Kostaka.
Who cares about his point total in he ahl, I don't think anyone is expecting him to come in a be our future pp qb. If you accept that hiss likely ceiling is solid 3rd pairing dman that plays physical, it really just the defensive game that we should hope keeps coming along. |

Without seeing him live this year, his stat line hasn't shown it. He's taken the most PIM on Hartford he has one of the worst +/- on the team, his offensive game has slow down tow. Over the next 20 games he needs 10 points to match his total from last year. - tomburton99
Judging McIlrath by his stat line is like saying Stralman carried Staal because Corsi IMO.
For defensive defensemen, you just have to watch them play consistently. The guy should not have been a 10th overall pick let alone a 1st or even 2nd round choice. But he's our property and has shown some strides this year. I don't think any Rangers fan should be rooting against him and trying to poop on him as much as possible for anything possible. He's our property and a Ranger.
It's almost as if people would rather seem him end up a true bust that never makes it to the NHL just to poop on Sather rather than see him turn into a quality top-4 defenseman. |

He has the worst +/- on the team in terms of defenseman. So that says to team he still hasn't figured it out. |

I not poopting on Sather, but to me in limited time i've seen him. He's not goeing to be a good or even adequate defenseman in the NHL. No matter what he should or shouldn't have been, he's still a top 10 pick. 5 years later we're still waiting. |

He's a -3. the other d man on team are +1 or 2 at most.
You just need to get over the fact he's a 1st round pic, there's no going back. If you can accept his ceiling you realize he offers something none of our other prospects have. Klein was in the minors until 24 or 25, remember Sauer? He was in the ahl until 24 and much like McIlrath missed some time early when turning pro.

He was definitely overwhelmed in the few NHL games he played. But you have to imagine he'll only get better from those games. |

Sauer actually played well when he was given a chance in the NHL. I'd glady take Sauer back. And were really comparing Klein to Mcilrath? If Mcilrath was legitimate option, Klein would not have been a necessity. |

I actually wouldn't mid Mcilrath if we was crease clearer and took penalties that were accepted as "penalties worth taking." Sticking up for his teammates, clearing out the crease for Lundqvist, etc. But his fighting 4th liners makes me crazy. What does that accomplish? He off the ice for 5 minutes and put the team down to 5 defensemen. |

He's got a reputation as a fighter so other fighters are going to challenge him while he's new to the NHL. It sounds like management have talked to him about having more of an impact outside fighting. |

Talbots inability to challenge shots and know his angles isnt a good sign. Does Skapski get the start today? - rferrone
Really? He has the best gaa and sv% for goaltenders who have played in at least 30 games over the past two seasons, if his angles were so bad those numbers wouldn't be |

The shots he was beat on were blasts, where he was screened. The first, he was deep but had just made a save and puck was deep in the crease area, then popped out to Josi. Talbot never saw it due to screen. The second one, he possibly could have been out a bit further rather than just inside the crease, but puck came quickly around boards and Weber has a cannon. The third, he was screened as well. You could argue on all three he should have been above the blue paint rather than on edge, but don't know if that would have made a difference. |

You're missing the point I'm trying to make. I'm comparing Klein to Mcilrath in the sense that Klien spent plenty of time in the AHL before ever getting a sniff by the predators, he never put up crazy numbers there either. So McIlrath still very much has a chance to develop into a serviceable bottom pairing d-man and bring an element none else brings. Klein played 3 full seasons in the AHL, McIlrath is 1.5 season in, thats all and still only 22.
I also don't like the fighting 4th liners there but I would bet they're the ones looking for bouts more so than he is. He needs to focus on playing D, no question about that.
It's a good thing we don't need a righty dman now, and unless for injuries we won't need one next year either.

Yeah he's been a great backup. Im talking about the three goals last night from the top of the circle. He wasnt challenging the puck or seeing it very well |

he saw the first one, didnt get his glove up, thought he was in better position for the second, and third he was screened but tell me lundqvist wouldnt have stopped at least 2 of those. I understand letting up one but 3 is inexcusable. You cant give up 3 clean shots like that in a game

Those goals were just given up at such poopty times. 2 at the end of the 2nd? 1 with 7 mins left in the 3rd?

If it wasnt for klein and staal he wouldve given up another completely out of position. 3 on 20 shots is never good. No garbage goals, all clean shots from a good distance. I love talbot dont get me wrong, but he needs to make at least one of those saves.
Not a good start. Is he playing again today? |

I think he played well enough to give the team a chance to win and made some great saves. He's a good backup goalie but that's all he is. |

Equating Talbot to Lundqvist is unfair plus Talbot played well against Boston. Not overly threatened but to say the back up should equate to a top-five goalie is a bit of a stretch. |
