I would only buy him out if I needed the cap space to do something else.
- MJL

I think by ridding ourselves of Lecavalier and Umberger, we finally take that next step towards the youth movement and further from bad deals. Nothing against the players themselves. I think they've both proven to still be useful.

Nothing to worry about, everyone but VandeVelde, White, Bellemare, MDZ, Colaiacovo, Schultz and Emery are signed from this 23rd place juggernaut for next season. We're all set!
- Jsaquella

Exactly -- you need room because it shouldn't even be considered bringing this roster back as-is

Over the past three years, they will have missed the playoffs, finished 7th in the conference, then missed -- all with upper-half of the league goaltending, a top-five Power Play, a Hart Trophy finalist and another forward who could finish in the top 5-7 in scoring

They don't need to throw the baby out with the bath water, but they do need to clean the tub

Any UFA that is capable of replacing Streit is going to come with a hefty price tag. It wouldn't be fair to either Ghostisbehere or Morin, nor would it be an ideal way to develop a young defenseman, to expect them to take on the responsibilities on the team that players like Streit and Coburn take on.
- MJL

If.. They were to end up with 3 first rounders ( trading Coburn and Streit) who's to say they couldn't use one or two of those picks to make a trade .
I also think Manning should have a chance to play of this team. Can't be worse than Luke
Maybe Morin and Ghost do need time but a lot can happen between now and next October

I'm not even talking about room for the Flyers, I'm talking about teams having room to acquire the guys the Flyers will be trying to trade away.

The Flyers might be the highest spending team in the NHL, but they're not alone. There's as many as 10-12 teams using LTIR to remain in compliance with the cap.

Teams will have younger guys coming off ELCs, they'll have pending UFAs they want to keep and the kind of guys the Flyers will be trying to deal away are not exactly the kind of guys that most teams will be eager to overpay for.

That's my concern with the cap staying stagnant or increasing only slightly. I could care less about adding free agents, I want to be able to move bad deals out, so the Flyers can have the wiggle room when they're serious contenders.

I don't care about bringing back the same roster, I care about getting rid of bad deals before they need to give raises to Voracek & Couturier.

Any player capable of taking on a top role on the defense, that they might trade for, is also likely to have a sizable cap hit. Manning absolutely could be worse then Luke Schenn. And I can guarantee that between now and next October, neither Ghostisbehere, or Morin will turn into player ready to take on the roles and replace player like Streit and Coburn in that time frame.

If the Cap doesn't rise as much as was expected, it will of course limit teams spending. There are still plenty of teams with plenty of cap space. There is a premium on good defenseman. I think the Flyers will be able to move a defenseman or two if they choose to. I don't see that being a big issue. The return may not be great.

Not saying either one of those guys would have to replace those two players. A UFA could replace one of them.
If you are trading say ... A first pick plus for a Dman in return, I am sure there would be other players going back in return from the Flyers...
Manning could be a 6 dman

Coburn (foot) willl make the 4-game road trip with #Flyers and could play at some point.

Simmonds has played with every player on the damn team. It is time you stop making excuses for the guy. He played with Couturier and Read and did nothing, played with Giroux and Voracek and did nothing, he played with Schenn and Laughton and did nothing. They guy has played on every possible line with every possible combination and has contributed NOTHING 5 on 5.
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

Simmonds looked good 5-on-5 with White and Straka for 3 games.

I would rule out Lecavalier retiring. That's not going to happen.
- MJL

If he doesn't want to leave the east coast and the Flyers tell him that he is the 13th forward next season, sure he could retire or simply not play

Players do that more often than people realize; Ryan Dempster took a year off to spend with his family, then retired the next, and left 13 million on the table

Tim Thomas, etc. -- it happens

I'd be every bit as interested in JvR as we are Evander Kane.
- SuperSchennBros

I don't think our front office would be. JVR took some needless shots at the organization in the past year. Sounded mostly like excuses to be honest.

I personally don't care for the kid.

It could happen, but Lecavalier has said that he's intending to play out his contract. Maybe being the 13th forward will change his mind, but that's a bit of a stretch.

It would be great for the Flyers.

I'd like improvement, but smart improvement with an eye to the future. I mean, they could trade Sanheim, Morin and this year's 1st for Chara and be better....but in 4 years.

That it does happen on rare occasions, is not reason to think that it might with Lecavalier. Dempster had a daughter with a medical condition.

Its funny. A lot of the people that whined about Homer are the ones looking to make massive deals involving young players.

That plus the amount of people that are willing to deplete our already not so deep forward depth to get Kane for the 1st line... I'm just glad a guy with patience is running the show now.

I'd consider a move for Kane, because he's young and skilled.

But he's more an exception for me, because there's not a lot of big deals I'd look for now. I'd look for picks, or prospects.

No real need to argue a hypothetical; since it is acknowledged that it does happen. Lecavalier is a rare case in the regard that the player has an NMC and is reportedly not keen on playing in Canada or leaving the East Coast, so if he is not happy in Philadelphia, he would have to make a decision

Finding a middle ground is the key. Continue to draft and develop for the future. The Flyers also just can't trade any defenseman they can, to get draft picks. They still need to field a team next season, and shouldn't be giving any season away, including next season. Anticipate for next season, and trade who isn't in the future plans.
