Yes you are right, so offensive minded D always make more money and get higher value in trades. So it may come down to what teams need more does a team need a big D to play 5v5 and there happy with both PP units or do they want to upgrade the PP unit.

I don't think you understand how the cap and salary structure works... The Canucks can fit both players in at the deadline or move back a tiny bit of salary. For these 2 it's a 1st and 2nd,

Nope Vancouver will not move picks for UFA's .... unless we are talking late pics. Plus if we wanted Santorelli we could have signed him and if we wanted Franson we can just want till free agency.... Best be looking elsewhere.

Okay, I'll give this a shot.

1. The Canucks are not a contender or close to being one, and the core isn't going to get better with age so I don't expectant better next year either, or even the year after.

2. Bo Horvat is one of the few decent young players they have in the organization, and with Gaunce not exactly lighting up the AHL and McCann/Cassels still only in junior hockey he's the only decent young centre they have in the pros right now(Vey's been playing both RW and center so who knows where he ends up)

3. Both Santorelli and Franson are pending UFA's, and thus potentially just rentals(see point 1 for why this would be pointless for the Canucks.

4. Both Santo and Franson will demand hefty raises. I like Santorelli a lot, but he's still a bottom 6 forward on a good team, the Canucks already have a team full of third liners outside of the top line.

5. Cody Franson is not worth the money and term he's asking for. Plain and simple. I'll cry if he Canucks sign him for 5-5.5M per season for 5-6 years in July. Let alone trade a good young player and/or a pick for him now and then overpay him.
