I really think this is what he'll wind up getting on a good day. A smart GM will give up only a 2nd for him. Now if he's resigned by the trade time, he could easily fetch a 1st.

Sound logic by him to bring up the Kaberle deal. Paul Gaustad got a 1st, a washed up Martin Erat got Filip Forsberg.

Okay, I'll give this a shot.

1. The Canucks are not a contender or close to being one, and the core isn't going to get better with age so I don't expectant better next year either, or even the year after.

2. Bo Horvat is one of the few decent young players they have in the organization, and with Gaunce not exactly lighting up the AHL and McCann/Cassels still only in junior hockey he's the only decent young centre they have in the pros right now(Vey's been playing both RW and center so who knows where he ends up)

3. Both Santorelli and Franson are pending UFA's, and thus potentially just rentals(see point 1 for why this would be pointless for the Canucks.

4. Both Santo and Franson will demand hefty raises. I like Santorelli a lot, but he's still a bottom 6 forward on a good team, the Canucks already have a team full of third liners outside of the top line.

5. Cody Franson is not worth the money and term he's asking for. Plain and simple. I'll cry if he Canucks sign him for 5-5.5M per season for 5-6 years in July. Let alone trade a good young player and/or a pick for him now and then overpay him.

If Franson were to be under contract for a reasonable amount, then sure he could fetch a high end prospect and a decent pick, but then again if the leafs could find a good contract for him they wouldnt be trading him at all. That being said i dont see any team trading a 1st and a top prospect, no way that happens, and if thats the demand and nothing else, hes going to walk in june for 0 in return

so would you rather take a decent (not top teir) prospect and a 2nd, or be stubborn and get him until summer and then see him leave for nothing?
