Serious question:

What would you take from Edmonton (be realistic) for Phaneuf?

- saskoil21

Nikitin, 2016 1st.

I'd like to add in a 2015 2nd, but I think that would tip the scale.

I say the Leafs win 6 of their last 31 games. They'll finish 27th or 28th.
- Mr_Smokey

For this reason alone, they'll play .700 hockey and finish 2 pts out of 8th.

I think that is how the top 5 will shake out as well.
- BetterCallSaul

I think it all depends on who wins the lottery. if it's Buffalo or Edmonton, then I agree as well.

If a team below them wins, then I don't see how Edmonton doesn't take Hanifin. If they take anyone else (assuming they miss on McDavid or Eichel) Then MacTavish needs to be tossed out of town.

With the talent up front that they have, having a top pair of Nurse and Hanifin will have that team kicking ass and taking names in a couple years

Bottom line is, no matter what, the Leafs are getting a solid player this year.

Nashville is now number 1 in the league. They easily took care of Pittsburgh, on the road yesterday. They're as tough as they come and can play it any way you want to. I imagine that we'll lose that one, probably 4 - 1, or 3 - 0. It's the next one, with New Jersey, that we have to lose in regulation. We need to get them ahead of us, with some breathing room. We also need to see Columbus catch us, then we're in tall cotton, in the bottom 5. I see the bottom 5 looking something like this:

McDavid

Eichel

Strome

Hanifan

Marner

- PrinceLH

Nothing wrong with getting Marner... But you know, Arizona has his wing-man, drafted him last year. They could go for the duo.

So, the stats improved, but the team didn't... Perfect..

the way this is playing out is great imo

if they draft mcdavid, leon or RNH doesnt seem out of the question imo, we'd likely need to retain some salary.

You can't listen to somehow who can't teach a defensive system. Let's be honest here, he knew what their issues were and couldnt instruct to them so its the players fault? Nah...he wasnt that "defensive" coach that people thought they were getting.
- Colin Dambrauskas

It's not just that. It was the GM who put these players on the ice and told the coach, work with them. It's like a broken down Chevy, being given Ford parts. If you want a grinding, defensive team, provide those types of players for the coach. Carlyle played to the strength of the players he was provided, skating, off of the rush, gambling defensively type of players. It's why he won as many games as he did. You see the results, right now, with your top end talent, when they can't score any more, because you've clipped their wings with this new system.

This is why the 'tuning out the coach' narrative was always bunk from the start.

Carlyle is a terrible head coach with terrible defensive philosophies. Plain and simple.

- mcleafs

i think its pretty clear they were listening to him and executing his game plan very well

Couldn't be better. Essentially mathematically eliminated themselves well before the trade deadline.. No illusions, no possible way management can still think there's some chance here.

If there was ever a time to go for broke and potentially make up for the years and years Nonis and his awful contracts might have set this team back, it's this season.

True, forgot about Domi

I think if it's between him and Strome, they might go with Marner. Hope the chemistry sticks.

...We just need to find a way to get McDavid and Strome to play with Brown.

Seems a lot of people believe Marner will be a RW in the NHL rather than a C. You still think he can thrive at centre?

They'll draft what they think is the best fit for their team. If they don't get one of the top 2, it will be Strome. Arizona looks like they'll draft around 4 or 5. I still think Carolina has a bit of a run inside of them, with the Staals being healthy again. Columbus worries me, as a team that could slide down instead. The Oil will pick second, unless someone other then Buffalo, or them, wins the draft lottery.

They take the BPA, as they should.

Elite level center with size, how would they not do it?

depends on how they value the top D in the draft I suppose if there isnt that much of a diff talent wise, they move down a spot or 2?

I take Eichel and move RNH personally

I tried...the trade scenario is next to impossible. Toronto would need one of Hall, Eberle, NHR to make it work in terms of cap space...but then you're making it far too difficult.

I'm worried that he might Patrick Kane things out. Kane centred two "natural centres" in Kostitsyn and Gagner, yet all three at the NHL level turned winger. Similarly Domi was a "natural C."
