Maybe not with Edmonton
There will be a team willing to take on Phaneuf's entire contact. To think otherwise is insane - TheThrill

They might have to retain some salary to get good value, but definitely no need to take on Horcoff. - Champ
(frank) "good value". Being rid of Dion is value enough for whatever the hell you can get for him |

I'm sure there's a hockey deal with Edmonton to be had. Problem is - Leafs think Phaneuf is actually a top 2 defenseman... |

Take the C off his sweater (worst mistake Wilson/Burke made), pair him with another good defensemen, and yes, he is a #2.

Glad to see that you're not a GM in the league.
Phaneuf can be moved without retaining salary. Look at the Gomez trade to Montreal. |

We keep hammering on our goalies and defense lately, but their numbers are quite good. Our GAA is way down and so is the plus/minus of most of our defensemen. Our problem is, we can't score. Since Phaneuf went down, we've seen solid games out of Gardiner, Granberg, and especially Rielly. Rielly and Gardiner are playing insane minutes and have been skating the puck out effectively. It's what scares me, when I think about the Leafs offense waking up and going on a run. It'll kill our hard worked for, draft position. We need to take a few key secondary pieces out of the lineup, to make sure that doesn't happen. Winnik, Santorelli, Lupul, need to be traded, to cause holes in the second and third lines. The top line is poor defensively, so they'll cause their own set of issues, in their own end. Cripple the penalty kill and we can coast into the bottom part of the standings and the top part of the draft. |

He needs a bonafide #1 guy to even possibly look like a #2...and the Leafs don't have that now and it would too much to acquire. So, you move him and try again with Rielly down down the road... |

Oh yes they are. Shanny and Nonis will listen to anyone who is willing to take Phaneuf on. |

With the league becoming log-jammed with player contracts and the cap stalling, players should be grabbing long term deals at 4.6M and running with them. There may be a lot of bargains out there with buy-outs and trade deal enticements (to unload some big contracts of good players). Some players holding out now may end up with less than what they refused earlier. |

This strategy began the second we named Horachek interim coach.
See last year's Florida Panthers. The guy is really great at getting his teams the 1st overall pick. This bodes well for us |

I can imagine them getting a first for him, from a team like Anaheim and maybe even Dallas. If Anaheim wants to make this deal, dangle Nick Ritchie and a second and it gets done. We may have to take back someone, short term, for salary reasons, but going through the motions for the rest of this season, it's doable.

Three loses without him but the defence has looked a lot better. Polak, Holzer and Granberg are blocking out players in front of the net, haven't seen that much before, more battles and separating the player from the puck behind the net as well.. Rielly has been great the past three games, that is the benefit of no #3. |

Its almost like Dion hurts his confidence or something. Even Jake the snake has looked better since Dions been out. And ive been a dion supporter.

Not for retained salary AND taking on Horcoff's contract.
This is how we end up in our current situation. We want other team's assets so badly, we put ourselves in a terrible position just to obtain them.
How about we offload contracts for picks and prospects and develop our OWN guys? Novel concept, I know. But - and get THIS - if we have too many, then WE can trade them away for other teams who will put THEMSELVES in the bad position to obtain them.
Sort of like what the Leafs always do, but the opposite. Might be worth thinking about - TheThrill
Horcorff has a year left on his contract. No problem taking it off their hands. Dic,kinson is still in the OHL. It would be us developing him |
