Maybe, but Kessel's contract is entirely on par with his age and production.
- gravyface

He got the kind of deal franchise players get, who don't get moved, it is a fair contract though. But the Leafs would likely get more for him if the finical commitment was not so big... Long after Weber and others are no longer good Kessel will still have contract. If he had 3 years on his deal the Leafs would max out on a trade...

The real team who should be shaking their heads is the team who drafted him...the Caps

I would be all for this a reilly/jones pairing would be amazing to watch
- cntpnt89

If, IF, IF, a trade like that ever happened it would accelerate things. Could build around Rielly, Jones, Kadri, Willie, and whomever the Leafs pick this season.

I don't see us needing to take cap back on that deal. Not unless it was a good young roster player < 25.
- gravyface

Not for the cap but likely for NAshvilles internal number...

From what I have read Dallas has shown interest in Phaneuf. And the leafs have showed interest in a Dallas prospect. Hopefully it's Jason Dic,kinson of the Guelph Storm.

Kessel's game has a lot of longevity to it: he's never hurt, has a compact, sturdy frame, avoids physical contact, etc. He'll slow down for sure, but like a lot of players who didn't take care of themselves early on in their career, imagine Kessel putting in a Stamkos off-season year in, year out when he's 30-31?

He'll be probably as effective as he is now into his early 30s.

If not, I could see him always remaining a threat, much like Hull was well into the end of his career (and who was also notorious for not taking care of himself).

That thread was the best in the history of HB.

I (frank)in laughed all night and the next day.

It was maybe second in epicness.

First was when Ek posted a big dissertation on what it meant to him to be a journalist. Nothing spells journalism like grade 3 grammar skills.

I agree, just wonder on a team like Nashville, who have an internal cap under the normal number by a fair bit, would want Kessel as their cornerstone forward? 7 years is a long time. If he had a few years left they would likely jump at it, probably a few teams would. Teams with low budgets would have to send someone the other way, if your the Leafs you want a guy who will be a FA soon... Plus he isn't a guy teams want to build around, even the sloppy Leafs shouldn't, he is a comp peace added to a contender, the Bruins and now Leaf fans at least see that, thats why 7 years at 8 is a big pill...

They've had everything but the firepower up front. Kessel would be a perfect fit and would take some pressure off of Forsberg for the 3-5 years while he matures (he's only 20 and very likely won't repeat this pace next year).

A winning team puts fans in the seats in these US markets; Kessel would do very well there with a good strong supporting cast surrounding him.

Good points... Well I'm all for a trade with Nash, and it makes sense in lots of ways... Would you settle for Jones, a 1 and a 2?... or better yet Jones a 1st and Oli or someone like that coming back?...
