why is that deal unrealistic? Kessel has MAJOR value, dont underestimate the value he has.
- DougGilmour_93

it's fair value but isles would really need to be sure they have a team to compete to give up all that youth

No I don't think it's a complete salary dump but the Leafs will take some salary back. The Oilers are not going to trade Nurse.
- Champ

The Oilers probably won't trade Nurse, even though odds are he'll never be as good a defenseman as Dion is now. I don't think the Leafs will have to retain any salary though, they're enough interest in him, and if they wait for the off season there will be the cap space on many of those potential buyers.

and as of right now..they don't. I still think JVR makes more sense for the NYI. He's affordable, young, locked on their top line for years. Kessel would be a draft deal but with JVRs contract, he can go at the deadline. He'll fetch a hefty price.

who knows what nurse will be. I see him as a 2-3 guy but rock solid. Take away dion's first few years in calgary, and nurse can easily be him. And i don't think dion sucks.

i don't think the trades were fair value. Not to discount kessel's impact but that's 3 top stud prospects/young players.

NYI and Nsh are the best bets. But we aren't getting Jones
- clark_griswold

Everyone wants Jones in the package, but I would he happy with Ellis, Fiala, and a 1st rounder.

Good call! What would you take in a JVR deal though? They'd most likely not want to give up roster players really. Future first round and this years second?

We need size and strength, at the back end and at centre. Why I'd rather have Jones and draft Strome. Get those pieces and add it to Rielly and Nylander and you have the makings of a damn good core in 3 years. Use the rest of the core assets to acquire draft picks and players already drafted, but not playing for contending teams. Rebuild complete in 3 to 4 years, if done right.

ellis is solid but we have too many like him. I see a package like (and don't shoot the messenger)

colin wilson, a 1st (which is low) and fiala. IF kessel goes there. That may be too much. Point is, if we got 2 1sts and a 2nd for phil now, they'd be lower picks and in no way equal sequin / hamilton.

That's roughly equivalent to three 1st rounders, which is fair value for Kessel. What's the group 2 compensation for an $8 million player, two firsts, a second, and a third?

I think JVR is great. He's a guy that can go to any team and be as advertised. PPl want to keep him because of his deal. Its a great deal. But if we're bad (as we will be) for 5 years +, he doesn't do us any good.

in a perfect world it would be for strome straight up. but that's wishful thinking. Im thinking a 1st and 2nd next year since they don't have a 2nd.

Again I'm not overvaluing JVR or undervaluing him. Im sure NYI and leafs fans both would disagree. It's a tough trade but i'd do JVR straight for any of strome, dal collie or rein hart. Or the picks. Again, JVR would be on their top line for years and affordable.

O'Reilly at $7 mil for 7 years is more valuable to the Leafs than Phaneuf and his contract.
- Champ

Ridiculous.

O'Reilly at that price tag on a stripped down and rebuilding team would become Clarkson 2.0.

again...i have them bad for 5 years and he is our most valuable asset one could argue. Half price of phil and signed for as long. I think JVr fetches a ton.

No I agree with you. He's a great player and sadly someone gifted me his name on a Leafs jersey this Xmas but I can see him going.

He's a great player and coming off a 30 goal season last year with that contract he'd be a steal for anyone. Any contender would love him as he can fit into a top 3 role for dirt cheap.

JVR should be traded alongside Kessel. Putting those two together would get you an incredible amount in return as well as guarantee a free fall in the standings for at least a couple of years.

he's a great player. A power forward (not lucic but great hands and net presence). His contract is such a big attraction. Hate to lose him, but for where we are going ( a long painful road), he is no help to us.

You have to build around someone...and he is young enough, big enough and cheap enough to still be that guy

just too much cap though. They'll both go to a contender or team on the rise like NYI, Nsh, etc

Then you might be able to get Strome, Dal Colle and Reinhart
