Once they get scientific possession data (chip in puck/sticks) this proxy poop will be useless. - 1979AD
Did it at the all star game. Nhl supposedly looking into the camera tracking system too.

Yup, and even those real possession numbers are still just what they are ...numbers.
Lots of factors in play to build a winner. My biggest issue with analytics is the idea that PDO is "luck". IE. that every goaltender is the same and that all shooters are the same.
For me you balance everything and what I'm after is guys with good possession numbers who also have some elite level skill. Kadri "could" be one of those guys.
Winnik has the possession but he's got stone hands.
Kessel has the skill but can't do the other things to bring about positive possession. |

It is an issue for sure. Just like analytics telling us that Gardiner is the Leafs best defensive defenceman is an issue.
Corsi/Fenwick - very important stuff but not perfect. Gotta use more measurables to get the full picture. - The Law
Yeah. Absolutely it seems like people use it for pointers. I'd imagine it has some uses, but you hit on the perfect point for me. When it tells us Jake the snake Gardiner is the best defenseman on th team I pretty much discount everything it stands for |

Winnik has been one of the best in the league for years at suppressing the other teams possession. He's more valuable than most realize. I'd still dump his ass for a 2nd rounder. - The Law

So, what you're saying is Leafs need to find a player that plays like Winnssel? |

Who said anything about corsi? - burn
burn..you love kadri...i get it...i can't stand him...let's leave it at that. we both agree he's a 2nd liner. I say nothing is guaranteed, but if you think he's ever going to be a 1st liner on anything more than a bottom 10 team i'd say you are insane. His numbers haven't come close to the shortened season; and he's nothing more than offense (not a PK guy, not a big guy who hits or fights, not a good faceoff guy). A one dimensional offensive guy who isn't a hugely offensive guy. His 200 ft game improved but could it have gotten any worse? Let's just walk away my friend.

I see lots of improvement in him.
I think what is insane is trying to act like you know he can't become something more. You don't know.

@TheFourthPeriod: NHL's jersey deal expires at end of season. Rbk will push to retain rights & Nike will make pitch, but expect Under Armour to step up (1/2)

not at all. shot attempts will always be a better measurable than active possession. for the most part they should go hand in hand: high Corsi = high possession. but what about a team with solid active possession numbers but consistently out-Corsi'd. maybe they have the puck a lot but they're not doing much with it. - DoubleDown
Read a great piece somewhere in the last week that went beyond simple possession numbers. They looked at shots, scoring chances and ultimately goals and merged it all into a nice little Report.
Leafs, predictably, one of the best at converting limited scoring chances into goals. And the worst (by a long long shot) at giving up scoring chances. Even with goal g'tending they couldn't keep up to the number of high quality scoring chances they were giving up.
Edit: and predictably it showed that Rinne, Price and Lundquist were the 3 best 'tenders in the game. |

If you can scientifically measure possession, you don't need shot attempts anymore - you can use actual shots. |
