If a 4th line player were on the ice for 20 shot attempts total between two teams, and their team had 12 shot attempts and the other team had 8, they'd have a Corsi or Fenwick (Corsi includes on goal, missed, and blocked shot attempts, Fenwick includes on goal and missed - this is part of the issue with these two stats - 8 goals on 8 shots is trumped by 12 missed shots) of 60%, which is higher than any Penguin player. A player on the opposing team with 8 shot attempts would be at 40%, which is considered extremely low.

If a player was on the ice for 1000 shots a season, the difference between 47% and 53% would be 60 shots, or about 3/4 of a shot a game. The guy with 47% would be considered a poor possession player, while the guy at 53% would be considered a great possession player.

- hardnosed

As I try to understand these 'advanced stats', I cannot get past the statistics are produced via a team performance if I understand correctly. Yes there are individual shots on goal taken (with bias apparently), but Corsi & Fenwick are numbers produced via the team. If the team has shots on goal & player X is on the ice he has a positive Corsi. Even if he doesn't touch the puck or make a play he gets a guernsey.

When individual player stats are more thorough ie; every touch of every player is taken then real advanced stats can be formulated - not taking into what time the games are played, where, training before or not, meals etc.

Looking at the relative information it appears that the stats that are taken currently are matched with teams & game results not stats are there that the game matches if you get the drift. Too many variables in a game of anything really including hockey for someone to come out & say with some certainty that team X will improve or win. In the same way that team Y will regress or lose.

I think the stats are interesting & gives a lot of valuable information that is general information. Too many variables that don't have precise data to be high end in my opinion which isn't too important when it comes to hockey or hockey stats. I'm sure there are many things that I don't know & or understand.

But we have stats here in Rugby league that are individual based stats but haven't gone to the advanced stage yet - basic game stats. But these could very well be developed which I'm sure the pros look at in their video reviews & study individual tendencies to take into consideration - but they are 'individual' stats. How many times does Sid touch the puck, how many positive touches, who he beat, which D was caught out of position on a play allowing a break away, things like that.

What would the stats have predicted against the Pegs when we had 80% of our scoring sitting on the bench? Is that why the stats guys don't come out before games & put up the numbers? Possibly. They are there for the long run, but people need patience with them & not jump the gun or shoot them down.

So, serious question for all of you:

I think that about 100%, possibly more, of the people who post on here regularly agreed that the type of hit on Letang was complete bull, and that players like Rinaldo should be thrown out of the league, and that he should have been suspended more than 8 games.

Let's say, theoretically, that the Penguins had Lapierre and he responds in kind with an equally/more blatamt cheapshot against Giroux or Voracek. Would you feel the same way about Lapierre?

- jmatchett383

Before replying I would like to add a couple of things.

If you didn't know about other games you would think that Pens games are the only ones with fights reading some of these posts. Remember the first Ducks Sharks game? Slug fest, cheap shot alley & Jackman getting a game star for his fights

Teams fire up against the Pens because presently that is the best way to win the game. Look at today's game - I realise this question was before the game but look at the game & some of the tactics employed by the Caps. 4 fights? All the Pens fault? They targeted Sill first then another went Downie & straight away it's Downie's fault because he is Downie? How many fights V Flyers? How many started by Pens?

The retaliation course is becoming a necessity if the Pens want to go far. Sides are bigger & meaner than the Pens so what do you think needs to happen to be successful. Why is the west packed with big physical players some that play with an 'edge'? Look at the Jets? Do you go on their board & ask them to justify why they play hard & take penalties & fight?

Downie has ability - but also a reputation deserved or not. Carcillo, Rinaldo & the like are players that have zero control. Tell them something & they understand 1 thing, do as much damage as they can whatever way they can. Downie isn't that bad, he just loses his temper & argues with the refs after a fight & hello misconduct. Same today & happened half a dozen times this year.

The Flyers had an objective, all for 1 & 1 for all. Take them out best way you can - that would be the kind of thing that was said. Rinaldo got told something by his captain & he followed suit best way he knew. Was it his fault? No not entirely, the players know each other, know their limits & what they are capable of. Giroux (IMO) told Rinaldo to do damage knowing full well what could happen. I haven't personally seen any apology from Berube or Giroux for the actions of Rinaldo - so I'm not saying they haven't. Should they? I think so. If they don't, then they condone what happened - no problem.

Edit: ok gone too far for the apology bit, but no public comment on the hit being bad?

If a Pens player retaliated for an incident like Rinaldo's? If you walk out in the rain without a raincoat, will you get wet? Don't complain about getting wet if you walk in the rain. The NHL's environment is like a rainforest - it loves the rain.

This team does not seem to get up for conference or divisional foes.

0-2 vs Flyers

0-2 vs Caps

1-2 vs Isles

1-2 vs Rags

IMO the teams compete level in most of these games has been disappointing to say the least. Sid has been largley invisible in these games as well. He looks off and tuned out.

It's all a diabolical plot by HCMJ to throw the season games against the big Metro teams so come playoffs - ha the real Pens play & blow them away.

Out of all the things we all complain about on these boards...Scuderi, 3/4 lines, Adams, whether or not MAF is good, the one, and perhaps most important, is 87's decline in play since the Olympics last year.

I've posted on this board a few times over the past couple of months that he isn't the same player.

For whatever reason, he looks disengaged. Shows nowhere near the passion and fervor during games that he used to. His skill level has dropped. When he gets a scoring chance, I don't even get excited anymore. Most times, it isn't going in.

His PP game is terrible. The lazy passes are so irritating to me. Just blindly throws a backhand pass in the slot or tries to fit a pass between 2-3 defenders. Pass gets picked off. Counterattack.

Pens aren't getting $8.7 dollars worth of effort from him.

With him and Malkin taking up so much of their cap space, if either of those guys don't produce, they have no chance.

My saving grace/hope at this point is that 87 has realized how meaningless the regular season is and he's just pacing himself for the playoffs. If he continues this play in the post-season, .....

LOL, I'm blown away, you spend so much time here I thought you were 12 or 13. Your trolling is pretty epic for a middle aged loser though. Good for you

Or did you see pictures of the 4 cups and are full of poop?

Sutter has become the most frustrating player on this team. People can what they want about Bennett and injury, or Crosby not being physical enough (frankly a cop-out considering his two way game gets better every season), but no player has stepped into a top six role and shown less than Sutter. Bennett has been good, but needs to work on finishing. Spaling might not have the numbers, but when he has played with Malkin, Malkin has actually seen a small boost in possession.
Sutter is just a black hole right now.

+1

And nothing like a good ass kicking to find you don't measure up. For this team to go anywhere in the playoffs they have to do better. If Sid is injured he should take time now and try to get better. Last night he looked lost. The night before without him they were a much better team. Coincidence? Don't think so.

Sid is not to blame. He was injured and more than likely still bothered.. Don't know why 39-87-72 wasn't a line.. I get the line adjustments we're doing because of injuries, but seriously we switch lines every single game injury or not. Gonna really scratch my head if when Comeau comes back he goes to the third or fourth instead of with Geno.

Huge Breaking News: After the loss last night the players had a closed door meeting, and Sutter was actually thrown out of the meeting after just a few minutes.....

Didn't last long though he slid himself back in under the door.

We need two Big wingers who can play If we want to match the physicality. Could Stewart resurrect his carreer playing for us? He can fight too.

Did you see him get absolutely tossed around when Perron was punching the player on top of Tanger? All of a sudden there goes Sutturd flying across the ice, like a rag doll.

I actually thought about Stewart, but evidently people are saying that he is totally done as a player.

5 things that the Penguins need to do to win the Cup this year:

#1 Trade for Jagr, and unload Sutter
#2 Bench Sill forever
#3 Pair Letang and Martin permanently
#4 Separate Downie and Lapps at all times
#5 Were the 3rd jersey every single home game
