Personally I don't think I'm overvaluing him so much as I would have no problem buying him out in 2 seasons. Best case scenario he turns it around and provides many things the Oilers crave. Worst case scenario he's an expensive bust who can be had for free right now.

That buy out could hurt us for many years and why pay a guy millions not to play?

It's not my millions? Buying out a player does suck mega balls but another possibility would be trading him to a team like Florida who struggles to get to the cap floor.

Why doesn't buffalo take him then?
- HouseArrest187

From "sources": Buffalo will pass on Richards, "for now".

Whatever that means.

Anyway, it would seem that Edmonton, with all the high picks already playing in the NHL, could use him more at this time. Just an outsiders view. I very well could be wrong.

Seriously, though.

Richards:

Leadership/captain material. Check.

Stanley Cup? Check and check.

Good on PP, PK, etc. Check.

Good mentor for all these youngsters. Check.

Bad contract/not enough cap room? MAcT makes the big bucks. Let him figure it out.

5.75M til 2020 for a 3rd/4th line centre. If his name were Vyacheslav Radyakulov it wouldn't even be in discussion.

Salary will kill when EDM's got to sign Draisaitl/their 1st this year to their next contracts+hopefully when they have a high end Dman. Also blocks emerging C prospects like Yakimov permanently. For someone regressing at 29, shouldn't even be a thought

Again wouldn't he cause a problem with your cap? 5.75 is a big hit. When you can just sign a free agent who would be cheaper & play the same role Richards would a bottom 6 forward who can pk.

I would rather bring in another guy for cheaper but who? Also Richards has never been a very good scorer since moving to LA but he still scores at the same pace as Dustin Brown, who is obviously a different player, but isn't "available". I'm also more on the trade route than waivers.

If he came here and played all of next season then we bought him out it would be a 15.4 million buyout over 8 years. That's virtually 2 million a year of dead cap space for 8 years. No thanks.

The risk far outweighs the benefits but Philadelphia Richards would be great for this team, it's a long shot though.

Well i know right here in San Jose James Sheppard is a UFA. He would fit that role for you guys. But i haven't looked at an free agent list, you'd figure there's gotta be cheaper options than Richards.
