Why the need to shed $ if you're rebuilding? Are you an owner? Is there going to be a long line up of superstar elite level players we need to spend on anytime soon or are youngish trying.to.create cap space for the next Komi, Clarkson, overpaid ufa etc... - systemtool
Obviously you guys want to keep him. So do i FOR the right deal and if he earns it. Not at all costs.
If he doesnt finish strong...im not giving him more than 4. nowhere do i say trade the bum now. Whats wrong with making gim earn it? If he cant...dont pay him. IMO hes not a 5.5 player and hasnt been since the short season |

Cap space is only valuable when you are trying to retain your players...and we don't have much worth keeping. - systemtool
Cap space is always valuable: you never know what's going to happen, when it's going to be useful (i.e. like taking Mike Richards off of LA's hands for a good prospect). |

You can't go full-out youth however, and have to keep some veterans in the lineup. If you have just kids with a couple of lower line vets then you'll be Edmonton, with less talent. - lumlums

Today the players all get overpaid. Kadri is not going anywhere. |

I don't think a prospect makes it worth taking on that contract. Cap space isn't much value for a rebuilding team, specifically. Which I'm sure I made clear. |

If he was playing at a near PPG pace now like he was in the shortened year (a year when the entire team was better), he'd be a 6-7M player.

Depends on who the prospect is and how much salary is retained. |

Like we are now? Or are the last 4 years a result of bad bounces? - clark_griswold
Doesn't matter what we are now, if you want to contend then you need some vets in the lineup. |

Sure but Kings can't afford to retain salary, you're not getting a top prospect, and term is still too long. Sure if he comes with unicorns and leprechauns in tow it depends, but let's not turn this into a fairytale. It's going to be a crap prospect, term will still be there, Richards sucks, and the Kings need all the cap space they can muster and can't afford eating enough salary. |

we aren't contending now, haven't been for years and won't for the next 5 years whether we rebuild or not. Hence, let's rebuild the right way for ONCE |

i agree 100% we are not contending and havnt in a long while.
but i must say i feel its good to have a bit of vet presence to help lead the younger guys, its actually quite beneficial...just dont be stupid about it and trade away young assets or picks for a vet player. 1-2 year deals at most and pay them a little amount.
its actually a problem the leafs have had in the past; either too many vets they paid picks for, or too little vets and have nobody to chime in and help lead.
the team we had for the playoff run a couple years ago had 0 veteran leadership and i honestly feel that may have helped a bit with that game 7 meltdown...oh, and randy calling a timeout!
but yes, dont overload the team with 'vet presence' but a player or two isnt going to hurt. |

and that's fine. But to me, people can say what they want about him improving his 2 way play. It couldn't have gotten any worse. He is still a purely offensive guy. he doesn't kill penalties, or is a faceoff wiz. He's not a shut down guy. So to me he's not a 5+ guy. I don't set the market. To me he hasn't earned it.
Do i want to keep him? yes. SO let's see him earn it. To me when i look at the points he has and compare him to the guys close to him in the scoring race, they are more complete players. I don't know, maybe im crazy. |

wha'ts wrong with disagreeing? as long as it's civil. That's what these boards are for -debate. On here it seems the majority dictates wha'ts right and what's wrong.
I guess you are happy with status quo. |

We don't need to worry about that. Leafs are going to lose all 34 games remaining.

Hence, what has happened to the leafs the past 5 years.
Leaf fans were bragging about how young the team is and so and so forth...well that youth hasnt gotten them anywhere.
Oh and fack Healy. |
