I suggest either cheering the (frank) up, or taking some warfarin. Find a new hobby for the next few months, because it likely isn't getting better and making a knee-jerk trade just to say that you made a trade is the worst move right now (especially given who the captain of the cruise ship is)...

We're not getting better this year, so grab a beer and be patient.

Evening Mike, this team is going nowhere without a Belfour/CuJo/Potvin type goaltender IMO.

Agreed, and more D with some speed and physical play.

The key is being smart and making decision that make sense five years from now, not just immediately.

"OMG we need a goalie RIGHT NOW!" - Trades Rask for Raycroft
"OMG WE STILL NEED A GOALIE RIGHT NOW!!!!" - Trades first rounder + for Toskala
"We need a solid winger!" - Trade Steen for Stempniak
"HOLY poop GUYS, WE REALLY NEED MORE LEADERSHIP!!!" - Sign Kelly Clarkson...

The problem has been that the management is trying to satisfy the fans by giving them that push, and yet nobody is smart enough to take a step back and look at the big picture. What we need is a team to compete regularly for the cup, not a team who might just sneak into the playoffs. That's done by retaining your picks and developing those players at their pace. I truly believe that we have some of the better lower round picks (3-7) in the league (Stralman, Gunnar, Kulemin, Komarov in the NHL, Bibeau, Loov, Brown, Nilsson, Valiev etc likely on their way in a few years)... we just need a shot of patience to go with it...

I have wanted Buff on the Leafs since he left the Hawks.

Instead they got Versteeg.

Beautiful man, I've never worn shorts and t-shirt outside in January in Edmonton before... I mean, we only got to about +10 (unlike those Lethbridge bastards getting +20 yesterday!), but it's still a nice change. Makes cleaning ice from the driveway much easier

I've just finished up my second as well, taking a well deserved break from thesis writing until after supper.

See the last 11 years. all you are doing is providing false hope my friend. I've said it before - the edmonton model may not work. But this is 100% not working. The players you mentioned aren't a core. A core is a 1st and hopefully 2nd line centre, 2-3 solid D and a great goalie. You mentioned no 1 1st liner other than JVR and Rielly in the future.

Again the rebuild has never happened in Toronto...and look at philly, almost as inconsistent as the leafs. i think if any teams have been treading water, it's philly and Toronto. Both teams have made a lot of mistakes out of not being patient.

- clark_griswold

I've been hoping for a full rebuild too, but there is a lot of logic in his suggestion.
Despite what's happened, I still like the 3rd liners we signed this year. We already have a lot of potential d-men in the system, and Kadri has changed my mind about him this year.
Trade off the captain and Kessel for picks in this years draft, and prospects. That alone SHOULD put us in a lottery position. If you still haven't got an NHL centre ready by 2016, ride with what you have the following year, and see where you are at.
By 2017, Nylander should be ready to make an impact, and some of the Marlies Swedish D-men should be ready. Rielly should just be entering his prime by then, and hopefully whatever prospects you got for trading the some of the core will no longer be prospects.
Back in (playoff) contention in 3 years, a bit younger, and with a much better looking future.

Who is taking Kessel or Phaneuf for picks and prospects?

This is a cap world. No one is giving toronto picks and prospects for those two. We've seen time and again that cap space in itself is an extremely valuable asset.

OK, Picks prospects a few bad contracts. Everything else still goes. I would just balk at any bad contract over 3 years.

So hypothetically.

Kessel for Bolland, Grimaldi and a 1st.

Im sorry but this "kessels contract" BS is exactly that BS... he's perennial top 10 scorer.. His contract is exactly what one of those costs... if the leafs put him on the block there are 29 teams calling and not one of them is caring about salary

Not exactly shorts ant t shirt weather here, but just staying around 0.

I'm not complaining, and minimal snow fall is nice.
