Leafs in both sell & buy mode. Willing to sell off pieces, but don't want a rebuild. Told goal is to swap out some pieces to "clean up room"

It is, because at this point Richards doesn't even look good enough to be a 4th line center... which means LA might actually be considering paying him to not play.

I was really worried that the Leafs were going to go into full-tank mode.

Thank goodness they realize (like I do) that this team is just a few key pieces away from being a contender.

I'm willing to sacrifice a little of our future to get good right now.

If I recall correctly from my grade 13 functions and relations class, if you keep trying the same thing over and over, sooner or later it has to work.

I will certainly not take a worst contract and paying extras to do so.
They did the right thing, let see if someone bites.
If not they trade him for a bad contract, not a worst one. Like Habs did with Bourque and Allen. Allen has been waived since.

That doesn't mean that they're "mediocore". It means they have a pretty obvious need and are doing their due dilligence to fill it.

Phaneuf at no point has ever made any real sense for the Kings.
