No way the Jets pick him up, they need a winger.

Eklund is tying this waiver move on Richards somehow to the Kings picking up Yandle.

How exactly does $925k in cap savings help them with Yandle?

I wonder if Lombardi was shopping Richards offering to carry part of his cap hit. If he was and could not find any takers then Richards really has fallen off. If DL would carry half that hit then Richards should look attractive to a few teams (under $3m per year).... at least I thought so.

Yea. That's the death sentence. MAYBE a team trying to reach the floor and in a rebuild stance takes a shot, but I doubt it.

Are there even buyout options available under the new CBA? How would they be able to negotiate a buyout with Richards this OS (as someone posted) under the new CBA? Looks like this hit stays on the books for the duration to me.... and that will hurt a lot.

I think a team that's rebuilding would take him, but the cap hit is hard for a lot of teams and he just hasn't played well in a while. Hope he gets things going again where ever he ends up. Good Luck, Mike.

if the oilers have a bad contract they need to make a move on him and swap it

would help out in the leadership department

Except the "bye" continues until 2020 and costs you $5m a year. Richards is a character guy. Would he accept a buyout? Would it be allowed by the PA?

or if LA was maybe unwilling to take Dion..perhaps Oilers would take Richards and flip him for Dion?

(frank). Why not man... give him a shot... we need vets... and if he don't work out through his ass back on waivers...
- HouseArrest187

I think we have already made our quota of underachieving vets on the roster with ference, nikitin, purcell.

Addition through subtraction buddy. No one would trade for him and we got 3 kids that each make 750k (roughly) that will come up and play harder and better. so if your back is up against the wall this is the move you make.

If/when we lose Voynov, wouldn't that balance the books a little?

Yes, they could buy him out. They'd take 2/3 of his remaining owed salary spread out over twice the duration ($14.67M over 10 years). Then, they have to pay a salary cap recapture penalty since the contract is front-loaded. It has something to do with cap hit, actual salary, and some other things. The first few years would be okay, then years 4 and 5 would be hell, and then they'd have 5 years of just $1.467M in dead cap space.

Yes they are allowed as they were before. Article 50.9 of the CBA lays it out.

It works pretty much the same as before. A percentage is paid based on the contract and duration. Also of note, you MUST put the player on unconditional waivers before buying them out. It is considered a "notice of termination."

See Below. Jmatchett nailed it.

Curious where that 2/3rds cap hit comes from?

I thought it was 5.75 X4 = 23 X.66 = 15.33 divded by 8 more years = 1.92.

Not that it is too much different, but curious where Jmatchett is getting those numbers.

As a Kings fan, I was excited when he came here and what he brought to us. But, gradually he has been regressing worse and worse every season. No one seems to understand why that is. Then DL had that talk with him before this season, and MR stated he would come into camp extra ready and in shape to be better. DL said okay I trust you. Then he started okay, looked okay, but ended up the same. I mean think about it, if DSutter has him floating around the 4th line with Clifford & Nolan, then he really has fallen out of favor on his performance. I still think he is a great team mate with the players. That's not enough.

Fact is, he is making Kopitar, Quick, Carter, Doughty type money. But his output is no where near what it should be in comparison to other players in the NHL. DL would take many other players around the league with that salary that are doing way better than him. This whole thing is sad. I think us Kings fans nor DL/DS ever thought that this would happen. Still I cant figure the reason for MR do go that far down hill. But something has to be done to clear salary and upgrade this stagnant team. I hope DL makes some bomb moves to help us win another cup. GKG

See, that's why you guys win cups. For us, it's like Clarkson type money....

It's 2/3 salary owed, not cap hit.

Yeah...as well as the trades of:

Carter for Voracek/Couturier
Zhitnik for Coburn
Forsberg for Upshall/Parent/2006 1st
2006 1st (Nashville) for Hartnell/Timonen
Pither for Boucher/Alt
Leighton/3rd for Mason
Mesazros for 3rd
McGinn for 3rd

Other than that, yeah, not so great.

Oh, sorry:

OKT/5th for Leino
Rights to Dan Hamhuis for 3rd
Vandermeer for 3rd

If Richards does get traded, and let's just say he retires before contract expires on another team, do the Kings still get hit with that stupid cap penalty or does the aquiring team assume all responsibility?
