Not sure why people thought Richards would be claimed. The Kings couldn't even trade him for a conditional 7th round pick. No wants his salary. I do agree if he plays on more of an offensive minded team that he would produce more, but no one is going to take that chance. Maybe in the off season someone will take him, but if no one did now, given his 2 Cups in 3 years, then I just don't see it happening.

DL should have bought him out if he had that feeling. I understand why he didn't and was putting a lot of faith in him, but it is still a business and you need to think long term.

Quick and Brown will end up in this same spot in a couple years too. No one will want them nor their insane contracts.

Which end would the bite be taken out of? The end, or where the cut was made to split the sandwich?

Most Kings fans, including myself, wanted him to be bought out. He just isn't the same player as we all know. DL is just too loyal to his players that he tried to give him another shot, which I don't mind, but again, it obviously back fired big time

I don't want Richards bought out, and neither should you. If the Kings buy out his contract this offseason, his cap hit in 2018-19 and 2019-20 will be almost as much as if we just stash him in Manchester ($4.22M vs $4.8M), plus he'll be on the books with a cap hit of $1.5M until 2025. No thanks. We're better off trading him for a rental defenseman and retaining half his salary. At least then we only get hit with a cap hit of $2.875M for 5 years.

If you meant compliance bought out during last offseason, head over to the LAKI blog. You'll be surprised how many people wanted him to stay.

Here's a crazy idea. Trade Richards straight up for Alex Semin. Kings get rid of Richards, and Carolina gets a serviceable hockey player while opening up $1.25M of cap space. Kings then buy out Semin this off-season. Since his contract wasn't front-loaded, his buyout cap hit would be a straight $2.33M until 2021, a full $2M less than Richards' cap hit would be in 2018-19 and 2019-20. The buyout also falls off the books a full 4 years before Richards cap hit would.

Carolina likely has someone that can do math as well as you can so...
