Maybe retire. Then LA gets penalized.

If I remember the Hoff situation correctly there are actually two penalties. The team is on the hook for the remaining salary and then there was a second penalty to the team that originally made the signing. Does that sound right?

If Toronto wanted him, do they publicly say that they want to put a claim in for him? I think no. It would be a bad move for Toronto because of where they are currently, in a tire fire.
- Lilroot9

"Sources" are different than public statements. This is a TSN guy posting that, so it's a bit more realistic to assume it's valid.

They can't claim him without moving someone with a big contract.

Yes.. Thats why we hated trading Hoff. Me thinks we are still on the hook if Hoff retires.

It sounds right in a way where I think the penalty is based on cap savings IE actual salary V cap hit.

It would penalize LA more than Buffalo.

Yea I am surprised by this, just rolling the dice. The Sabres were worried cause we might have a couple top tier players that would need to get paid that would be an issue if he retired, so they made their move.

The point is that we would be on the hook for whatever salary he has left if we claimed him. That's why nobody will claim him. Toronto was only interested because they would be sending a big contract back.

We are cleared from Hoff completely.

The vintage market is low right now.

Lets face it, the vast majority of cards manufactured post 90 are never going to value unless they are limited print.

Vintage market is the way to go.

Picked up an 88/89 topps hockey set for 20 the other day. I already have several but for 20, the Hull rookie is worth 20 by itself.

Grabbing Richards does 4 things

1. Takes some heat off of Girgens
2. Allows the team to be flexible with Reinhart, Gringo and their first pick (keeping them at center or moving them to wing)
3. Improves our special teams.
$. Moves Coho 1 step closer to being out the door.

All good things.

- homiedclown

Why? . Why do I want to improve this team this year? For a few fans that do not want to understand why you want to draft in the top 2 this year? Can we claim him and send him to Rochester till next year?

Had we not bought him out we would be, but the buy out clears that issue up.

With Richards LA would be on the hook for the cap penalty

The problem is that the guy is one step out of the door already. I don't understand why so many people are ignoring that fact. He has "Danger" written all over him. You're not taking a flier on a guy. You're rolling the dice in a big, big way.

This is correct.

The moment the contract was bought out it became a null and void deal.

Richards doesn't make this team any better this year. They might score 8 more goals with him in the lineup. One of the goalies is getting traded one will hit a slump we are fine.

Agreed.

Biggest tragedy is they wanted no contact in reference to purchasing the site.

I would have liked to have been able to chat with them.

I do not want them to do anything that could remotely make us better this year. Besides if the stories are true I do not need another Derek Roy type party animal around the kids.

All of our goalies are UFA or RFA at seasons end.
