No, still too many years for Richards at the end. AMac is the only one I'd consider with the length of the deal.
- jmatchett383

Ok, so all we need to do is trade Amac and claim Richards on waivers.

And Vinny
- 3flyerkids

Nope. Vinny's deal is smaller and half the length. Richards is signed through 2019-20.

No, you let him (theoretically) pass through waivers, and then trade them for each other.

Flyers have plenty of Centers, they don't have many quality defenseman like MacDonald.

Andrew MacDonald?
- jmatchett383

No. MacDonald is a 4/5 defenseman imo. He's overpaid, but 4/5 defenseman hold much more value than 3rd/4th line centers. Richards decline has been so steep that I wouldn't be surprised if he was a 13th forward in a couple years. MacDonald should be able to hold his value for at least another 3 years.

Even though the cap won't be increasing much, it will be increasing over the next few years. His contract may be not look as bad if he remains a 4/5 defenseman in 3 years.

Richards contract will always look bad unless he miraculously becomes a top 6 forward in his 30s.

The short term cap hit will be more, while the long term will save the flyers 1 year on the contract. Not worth it imo

That really limits our options for trading Amac

I'd do it. Maybe with the heart over the head, but I'd do it.

3 weeks longer than it would take for AMac.

Okay, AMac for Richards -$1M?

Even if you don't like McDonald, it doesn't make much sense: Swapping out six years of an overpaid defenseman (bear with me) for six years of an even more overpaid forward doesn't help, especially on a team with two multi-year overpaid forwards on the roster, and with a mobility problem on the blueline.

I fail to see how this trade impacts our blue line mobility negatively.

Probably not. It's just a ton of money and years tied up in your bottom 6 (I would argue bottom line)

Where does AMac rank among our NHL defensemen in mobility?

Agreed. I don't like MacDonald, but I think he's a better player than Richards right now and projects to be over the next few years

It's even more years (and with $1M retained, more money) tied up on your bottom defense pairing.
