That's all I was saying

I could see putting together a bigger (in size) package for Petry, but I have an incredibly hard time picturing Snow trading a top prospect for a rental.

ok? and?

Generally you play lefties on the left side and righties on the right side. Petry wouldn't really have any bearing on Visnovsky's playing time

Our management has some sick Justin Shultz fetish and won't be happy until he's tied up on a huge long term contract. Meanwhile Petry who is a much better player is going to sadly be run out of town.

If Snow is going to make a major move like trading for Petry then I can't imagine that his handedness is going to be a huge factor.

You're weaker on the right side than the left. It should be taken into consideration

Not at all. I said before I would never trade Pulock for him and I would double-never do it because he's a UFA. Pittsburgh's 1st rounder is inconsequential to me.
- eichiefs9

even if hes signed to a multi year deal before the trade is official?

it would have me thinking...thats for sure.

Boychuk and Hamonic are our right-handed shots. Leddy, deHaan, Hickey, and Lubo are lefties. Petry would either slot in on the 3rd pairing to balance our D out at 1R & 1L on each pairing. Or you could slide deHaan back to play with Hickey and pair those two lefties together and two righties in Hammer and Petry.

I don't think which way he shoots is going to be a major factor.

Not too many sign and trades in the NHL though. Basketball does it more often.

I don't know if you mean a sign-and-trade? Or that we somehow locked him up long-term before the trade call is complete? Neither seem particularly likely. Snow would be rolling the dice picking him up either way, the key would be what he gives up for him.

I like to keep righties and lefties separate but to some coaches it's not as big of a deal as others

If this guy is so good and your D is terrible then why aren't they trying to lock him up?
- Vukota

EXACTLY!

If Jeff Petry is flat-out better than deHaan, then isn't he exactly what the Oilers need more of?

Also, Hickey is good offensively and gets the job done defensively when paired with Visnovsky or another competent NHL defenseman. It is only when he is handcuffed to Strait or Donovan that he gets into trouble.

Anyway, Reinhart and/or Pulock will be the depth defensemen come playoff time. They are the real #7 and #8 on the depth chart when one-way deals, two-way deals, waiver eligibility, etc. are no longer issues and neither will be traded for a rental under any circumstances. Other than Nino, who asked out, the Isles haven't traded away a former first round pick since the Milbury error. Every other 1st rounder between 2006-2011 is in the lineup right now and playing well.

If we somehow acquired him and I had my way, I'd spread the talent wealth and put him on the 3rd pairing. He isn't necessarily deserving of 3rd pairing minutes but it would be a huge ease to the top 4 guys knowing that a top-4 quality defender was playing on the bottom pairing. It would be nice to have 1R & 1L defenseman per pairing, far from a necessity but an added bonus.

I would put him 3rd pairing and spread the wealth as well. He is also capable on the pp or the pk. Nice to have a guy like that if you guys have injuries in the playoffs too.

i see him in the 4-4.5 range honestly. if they could get him locked up, id think about the pulock for petry+1st.

if not id do mayfield for petry and see what happens during the offseason.

- LetsGoIsles

But is that worth losing a potential game changer in pulock? I just don't think it's worth it.

He's a good defenseman but I don't want him if it costs us pulock. I would rather have the younger guy on an entry level deal at this stage. That deal is not worth it to me at all.
