I'm actually excited to see them without their "captain". I like Dion and I think he's a good number 2 and a great 3 but he is not a captain at all. I think the leafs players hate him as much as anyone.

This is the only possible explanation I can come up with for how nobody has done anything to help him with Ovechkin, Thornton and Staal over the past couple weeks.

jvr is 26...drafted in 2007. Didn't want to get technical. Point is....he has lots of value but won't help us. He could be my favorite leaf but if im gm, he's gone at this deadline
- clark_griswold

I love JVR and would want to keep him, but he'll be negotiating a new contract by the time the leafs are ready to contend for the playoffs and bone the Leafs on cap space.... so I'm 50/50

I would tend to agree.. sometimes we see strange things happen though.

it will be nice to see the leafs team without him for a good stretch

- senstroll

For where this team is and what this season has become I think it's a good thing. Put Gardiner and Rielly in some more important minutes and see how they respond.

we have to ice players who can actually play the game too, not just Marlies

im not being a smart ass, but if you think this team is making the playoffs anytime soon, you're crazy. Anytime soon as in 4-5 years. So what does keeping him around when he has massive value do?

naw man, naw...this team is 1 or 2 guys away. Just watch. Trade clarkson, lupul get a few stud pieces back and we're fine.

Unfortunately, rebuilds are hard and they suck for fans...but so does 11 years with results no better than a rebuild. But it is what it is...it's all opinion on here. I guess i'm just not convinced the last 4 years are a result of bad bounces..and that, you know this team really does suck

Not only that, he is part of the culture conveyed by the top line, and top players... He is terrible defensively, and they need a culture shift, no more top lines scoring and still big fat minuses...

i agree. playoffs won't be for at least 5 years..but that is necessary. Or we can try the ol' patchwork again...that seems to be working.

there is just worse players and contracts we need to get rid of first. Always cut your losers free and keep you're winners, that is if anyone wants our trash. Of course they want JVR

Sending away worse players and contracts are just gonna have wastes of bench space coming back and mediocre picks in the deepest draft since 2003. We need to get another 1st rounder and at least a 2nd if we want to do any kind of building.

And lets say they are in 5th draft position, and they have 1 or 2 more first, maybe they could move up even further...

im not saying i WANT to trade him. But you have to. You need to rebuild. I 100% agree with you no one wants our crap. They want the same players we want to keep. So....you stay status quo, or you rebuild. Can't have it both ways.

we can get that by trading Franson, Lupul, Bozak, Winnik, Santorelli and Komarov. Why do we need these facken guys right now? I'm just following the consensus train of thought on here so far

Franson might get a 1st. No one else you mentioned gets anything higher than a 2nd (maybe a few lower picks).

Put it this way..you are saying we need to get rid of 'worse players with worse contracts'...so put on your GM of the Kings/Ducks/Blues hat. Why would you give anything of value for those guys? They see the leafs play just as much as us...unfortunately

Cody Franson has to be worth a mid-late 1st. One or a package of Santo, Winnik, Reimer should get that 2nd.

You discount how GMs blow their brains out on Deadline Day, I don't know how it's gonna play out but my trade list doesn't include JVR, Reilly or Kessel

If Cody Franson can't bring back a late first round pick, you gotta pay him the 5-6 million/yr 5 year contract he's demanding!

How ridiculous does that sound?

So...

Gardiner-Polak
Percy-Franson
Rielly-Granberg ?

how do you guys see it?

- MCharisma91

unique opportunity to see what the young guys can do...... so in that spirit why not find and excuse to sit Gardiner as well... then you'll have the two d-men with the largest number of turnovers and bone-headed plays out of the line-up at the same time.

if it doesn't work - blame Reimer.
