How do you get the players needed to win a cup?

How long will that take?

Do you have players that will be past their prime when the team is ready to compete for the cup?

Keep Kessel and Dion though That's the vibe im getting around here for the past couple days.

kessel - unless he found the fountain of youth - wont be the same when this team is ready to compete for the cup. Phil will fetch most in return. its a no brainer.

realisticly you go after a 1st round pick, a roster player and a top prospect.

im not going to speculate on specific players as it is a waste of time.

To balance out money and whatnot, other pieces would be added to Jones. Likely Toronto would have to add a Holzner or someone like that as well. Jones is better than "a roster player", was a 2nd over pick a few years ago, and would be at least our second (if not first) top prospect for our future. Maybe Toronto gets Nashville to add in Colton Sissions, Kevin Fiala or Taylor Beck... And a pick. The add ons would be important to both sides, as there would need balancing done to add someone who makes 8M a year.

I just think to get a young player as good as Jones with as much potential as Jones - you have to make the other team better too... I for one would only be content with seeing Kessel leave if the trade brings someone as highly regarded as Jones as the centrepiece of the deal coming back.

I have this inkling that the Leafs are going to stand pat on blowing it up, aside from moving the obvious pending UFAs like Franson, until they know 100% that they can't get Babcock.

I think Shanahan believes he can get different results from his uncoachable players under Babcock. But if Babcock can't be signed or if he arrives and confirms that these guys are indeed uncoachable, then it gets blown apart.
