That's precisely the thing.... there just has to be some semblance of structure, musicality, or melody. There are some very poetic rap artists out there but the music (in a lot of the creations) is just garbage. It's really a dichotomy of sorts because there are a lot of artists in this genre that could really do well if they had better original music and quality background elements
- Zogg

true.

I find it easier to ignore what is being said than the music itself. And even better is you could have an artist like Snoop and I hear his voice, but not what is being said and it all flows... I find it harder to block out the music and background stuff and only hear the voice... maybe I am a bit messed up or the product of being married.

Where is the worship icon? lol.... great to hear your story of musical growth and appreciation. Not even I knew that Van Halen was influenced by Hackett. You are a virtual cornucopia of progressive rock information. Again I ask thee, are we long lost brothers? (my parents decided to keep you and sold me on Ebay for a box of bees)

All these names - Rhodes, Malmstein (what of Allan Holdsworth?) truly zap my brain automatically in recreating so many different styles, talents, and unique musical genius.

And I completely agree that, when you start playing/composing yourself, the amount of appreciation for various bands' writing skills, incredible musicianship, production and live abilities, sink in that much more. That is what makes people like Rhodes, Hackett, Howe, Belew, Malmstein, Holdsworth, Lucia, that much more iconic. They truly change the way music is written and played.

Hats off to thee, my friend

Long lost brothers we may be my friend. So nice to see many on here appreciating music on various levels.

Holdsworth...another great mention and influence on EVH. I believe Eddie Van Halen liked Holdsworth's stuff so much he introduced him to Ted Templeman the director/producer of Van Halen records in the early 80's. Not sure if the partnership ever worked out but there was a record produced and I believe Holdsworth won award(s) for best instrumentals at one of the Grammys.

More of my guitar heroes like Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson and even Zappa cited Holdsworth as an influence.

Great stuff my friend...great stuff.

Nhl classics is on right now. 1980 all star game. I bet I know 5 guys per team.

In 30 years, looking back at today's game, I wonder how many my kid will recognize.

You've summed it up exactly the way I feel about it. To me, you can get by with (even) cheesy or mindless lyrics if the music is excellent but there is no way I will enjoy a composition if there is essentially zero melodic/structured elements. You might as well just get a microphone, crank it up, and start @#$ shouting/yelling shoight.

where is that group hug icon? but you're right, it's great to see so many people enjoy various types music/bands. It's enjoyable to get off the subject of hockey for a few moments and get some dialogue going on with respect to other interesting subjects.

fantastic.. once again I'm surprised how many people on here are afficianados of not only sport but art. Yes, sorry I missed that Holdsworth portion you noted above. It's almost like a 6 degrees of separation thing. Truly interesting histories and musical growth that we got to witness as a music connossieurs (no, NOT music snobs..... ok, maybe a little

Great stuff, indeed. I love the list of some of your favourite guitarists, by the way. Christ, I think we could sit here all night and discuss influences and certain special composers/musicians including the musical progress the bands/individuals made from albulm to albulm.

Probably my favourite albulm - Wish you Were Here. Although it's really hard to choose between so many phenomenal works (including Gilmour's solo stuff)

Oh...I AM a music snob and the first to admit it...drives my girlfriend crazy sometimes too. She always seems to even it out though as tri-polar Tuesdays approach I'm not sure which version of her is coming...

I'd throw in a prospect in a Kass/ Lack deal to get OEL or Yandle.
- vancity787

I use to be a Yandle fan going back to junior. Not as much now...he turns the puck over as often or more than Bieksa. He would still be an upgrade on most of our D...
