Just enjoy good music, but often find the discussion of what people call good just as enjoyable as the music.

Cheers.

Love a good groove too. Check out Steve Winwood- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEkpGhmIC_U

Love Steve Winwood also. Can't believe how young he was when he 'broke' into the business. I think people tend to forget how prolific he was, starting with Traffic/Spencer Davis Group, and how much of an eclectic musician he was/is.

And he is still at it too. Why Can't we Live Together is at least this millennium too... I listen to new stuff and it reminds me of old stuff I should give a listen to...

You Sir, are a scholar and a gentleman (ok, not sure about the gentleman but certainly about the scholar - at least musically lol - so it's all good).

Right on the money, my friend, right on the money indeed (to me Gilmour and Hackett (of early Genesis) were the most pure 'feel' guitarists of all time, although perhaps Hackett had more of a classical upbringing). Great stuff which has stood up to the test of time. Any of these albulms we are mentioning could be a candidate for 'top ten 'island' compositions :thumbsup

- Zogg

Thank you so much for mentioning Hackett. I never got the Gabriel Genesis stuff for many years until I actually became a musician when I was 14 and picked up the guitar and understood music on a totally different level. I have been obsessed with music since I bought my first KISS record in 1976 in Richmond BC where I grew up.

Hackett was a major influence in two of my rock guitar heros in Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen. Hackett was tapping on the guitar before Eddie was and Van Halen himself cited Hackett as a MAJOR influence after attending a Genesis concert...Jimmy Page as well. Hackett also perfected a 'sweep picking' technique that Yngwie later used in many of his solos and recordings. Maybe it's YOU that is the gentleman and scholar for mentioning Hackett. I loved Danny Gatton as well.

Don't even get me started on the Neo-classical styles of Randy Rhodes vs Eddie Van Halen...lol

And Johanson walks away MVP I could care less if you're in a small market and you potted a couple goals. It makes the NHL look so bad. JT matched an allstar game record for goals and several other players had better games.

Amateure

It's amateur and you should probably know the fans voted (via Twitter) Ryan MVP not the NHL.

Where is the worship icon? lol.... great to hear your story of musical growth and appreciation. Not even I knew that Van Halen was influenced by Hackett. You are a virtual cornucopia of progressive rock information. Again I ask thee, are we long lost brothers? (my parents decided to keep you and sold me on Ebay for a box of bees)

All these names - Rhodes, Malmstein (what of Allan Holdsworth?) truly zap my brain automatically in recreating so many different styles, talents, and unique musical genius.

And I completely agree that, when you start playing/composing yourself, the amount of appreciation for various bands' writing skills, incredible musicianship, production and live abilities, sink in that much more. That is what makes people like Rhodes, Hackett, Howe, Belew, Malmstein, Holdsworth, Lucia, that much more iconic. They truly change the way music is written and played.

Hats off to thee, my friend

I went to high school right when Eminem was in his prime, so for better or worse, that was my soundtrack. I have a hippyish Aunt who was always making me mix tapes full of The Rolling Stones and Beatles and Floyd, and at the time I was like "yeah, thanks, whatever", but when I started to get into actual music, there they all were.

What I found with a lot of the gangsta rap was I didn't really listen to the lyrics that much after a while. All that boasting about how bad the rapper was got old and dated pretty quick... But I enjoyed a good groove. Thank goodness for Dr.Dre -The Chronic.

That's precisely the thing.... there just has to be some semblance of structure, musicality, or melody. There are some very poetic rap artists out there but the music (in a lot of the creations) is just garbage. It's really a dichotomy of sorts because there are a lot of artists in this genre that could really do well if they had better original music and quality background elements
