I'll take it as opposed to shutting down the season for the olympics with is 90% boring games where outclassed teams try to play the most boring defense possible to keep from being embarrassed with the occasional somewhat interesting rival game thrown in.

Scrap the CanAm U23, add Slovakia. The "Rest of Europe" team is fine, but the U23 CanAm team is ridiculous, and Slovakia has enough talent to at least hold their own spot.

(frank)ing ridiculous. It's supposed to be a national event. Including multi-national teams completely ruins that. The teams should be chosen by pre-tournament qualification like the soccer WC, and if they need more competitive teams, every country should be able to enter two teams: A and B into qualifying. I'd love to see an all Canada final

One of the reasons why the level of hockey at the Olympics is so high is due to its timing. Although it is a detraction for the NHL, the fact that the Olympic tourney is in mid-season generally means that the players are playing at optimal/peak levels (not entirely - due to injuries, fatigue etc.)

Having the World Cup in late summer will be like the first month of hockey season. Sure they will have a training camp but it won't take off the rust completely.

Also, how many Stanley Cup winners/finalists from the previous June will opt to pass on the event? How many groin injuries will we see? Going from training camp to elite competition will be tough on some of these guys. You really want to floor your race car as soon as you get out of the garage?

Olympic hockey is made for the fans.

The World Cup is made for the NHL.

The 96 World Cup and the 87 Canada Cup, both summer tournaments, were some of the best hockey that's ever been played. that i like.

i just don't like these gimmick teams they are adding .

The 87 and 96 tournies were dynamite. However, they were done in the vaccuum of no Olympic hockey (with NHLers).

Had there been NHLers in the Olympic games prior to or during those years, I'm not sure we would have the same opinions of the Canada/World Cup.

My point boils down to this: Any tournament with the best players in the world should be done mid-season not prior to the season. I understand why the NHL doesn't want to consider this (or continue this in the Olympics.)

However, from my perspective as a fan wanting to see the best players play at their best, the Olympics is hands down the best tournament (even if the World Cup is resurrected.)
