The fact that the Penguins let him leave the ice under his own power is baffling to me. If I'm Farnham (sorry, forget his exact name if I got it wrong), I know my job, and I'm coming off the bench and I'm not letting anyone stop me from beating him into the ice.

Again, not a deterrent, but at least a message that you don't touch our stars.

That would have been great! I honestly didn't think I could have enjoyed the game more than I did last night but this would have done it.

Some have commented on what a joke the NHL's stance on player safety is. You want to know what is really a joke?

Who will be weighing in on how to discipline Rinaldo - none other than Chris Pronger, who is on the Flyer's fricking payroll!

It is bad enough the NHL hired him to their "player safety" department in the first place when he was one of the dirtiest cheapshot artists in the league, but they did so while he is still being paid by one of the teams in the league.

And you wonder why so many people still consider the NHL to be a minor league sport.

- maaddmike

Chris Pronger is an advisor, he has no authoratative power. He is not the sole person in charge of dealing out suspensions, he can simply offer input, along with a handful of people who have more power in that department. His feelings are far from the law.

Stop wussifying the game, Ryan.

but f'real, Rinaldo's comments will earn him special attention, but he won't get the suspension he deserves. nobody gets the suspension they deserve.

I'd prefer blogs were other teams fans are saying we have a dirty piece of poop player who hit someone with a cheap hit. Boys need spadafora to come teach some boxing classes

But wait, guys, we have a much bigger issue. Farnham removed his helmet before fighting, which is a penalty. WHY WAS IT NOT CALLED?!

This is a very important issue and I refuse to get over it.

Yeah I agree. Not sure who on the Pens were on the ice, but had Farnham, Sill, Adams, Spaling, basically anyone not named 87, 71, 39 and BB cuz he would have been broken should have done something. Letang is a star and maybe not Rinaldo but the mood should have been fine be dirty on our star well do the same.

Also, it was a Dbag move when Scuds had a nice hip check and it resulted in a fight. To me that is just as annoying in the NHL.

What has gone overlooked in Wilson's blog was possibly the best quote from Rinaldo:

@JoshYohe_Trib
More Rinaldo magic...Question: "Do you feel that it (an ejection) was warranted in this case?" Rinaldo: "What do you mean, warranted?"

Wreckless hit by Rinaldo. Not nearly as malicious as some are making it out to be, but he will be suspended for it, and rightfully so.. Reading these comments I find the holier-than-thou attitude by the Penguin fanbase to be quite interesting. Over the past 5-6 years what franchise has been involved in more situations like this than Pittsburgh?

As you said though, Perry and Kronwall are great players. No one is saying that about Rinaldo and Carcillo. They are taking out great players.
- Ben37

You have a point, but you also don't.

Kronwall has taken out some good players here or there, and got jack discipline wise to boot. That's my point.

Sutter and Bennett I know for sure were out there, and we all know about those 2....

Sutter got tossed around all night long, it started from his first shift; he got picked up and punted into the crowd 1 min into the game. Then he slipped back in through the crack of the Zamboni door.

If Babcock is available after the season you try to get him. Johnston is clueless.
- Deadstar

That was pretty awesome how he rested the flyers first line right before they scored the game winning goal in OT.

I hate that clean hip checks (like the one on Malkin a few years back) always result in a fight. Big difference between a hip check and a low bridge. Yeah, they sting quite a bit, but it's part of the game. No need for a fight.

It's sad the rest of the Flyers fans don't agree
- znagle

Plenty do, plenty don't. There's fans of all kinds in every fan base. The Penguins fan base has plenty of homers too, it's just the nature of the beast. I ignore the Flyers fans and other teams' fans I think are just blowing steam.

Couldn't agree more. The only thing I would add is that the team needs to get punished with suspensions too. Player gets a 10 game suspension? Then give the team a 5-10 game suspension of one less player on the roster. Punish the coach, the GM and the team each time they decide to put a Neanderthal in their lineup. Coaches and GMs don't give a crap if Rinaldo rips someone's head off and gets suspended because they just replace him with the next meat-head. Lose a roster spot whenever a player is suspended and I can guarantee these muppets won't be working in the NHL anymore because they won't be worth the liability to their own team. It's really that simple.

But of course the NHL doesn't have the balls to do it...

I noticed something last night.

Last year, Crosby played his backhand side on the PP for James Neal to play his forehand instead. I thought it was ridiculous, as it limits Crosby to scoring anything but rebounds, which makes no sense (as good as James Neal was on the PP).

This year, for a bit at least, they finally put Crosby on his forehand (the "right" side of the PP). However, halfway through the game, I noticed Crosby playing his backhand side a ton. Any reason for this?

They realized hes a much more fluid diver on his back hand side.

Not to dismiss your article because it is all well written, but the whole topic can be summed up with these few words you included:

"The players are reactionary. They prevent NOTHING. "

- stashu

But the league can if they had a tangible, consistent dsicipline policy. The NHL discipline priorities
1) Did the player get hurt... (Should matter less)
2) The name on the Jersey (Should not matter at all)
3) the situation (playoffs et...) (Definetly should not matter at all)
4) Finally the intent of the Player!!!!

Number 4 should be number 1... the motive of the player is what matters.... is it a hockey play? was there intent to injure? Did it happen after the whistle??? if player know a lengthy suspension is coming as a result of a "Rinaldo type play" they ll think twice... This maybe beating a deadhorse, but if Staal was suspended to the crosscheck to the back of Crosby's neck or Boychuk for his attempted knee on knee with Malkin earlier this yearperhaps the number of incidents would be greatly reduced.

The last 2 games, I am now in the F Sutter crowd. He really doesn't bring anything. Im not sure Goc would be an upgrade though.

Farnham is like 5"9 185 pounds not really the enforcer type. More of an agitator energy guy which our line up needed badly
