Downie can play. Tocc has been a great influence on him.

Read the USA Today article on Farnham before labeling him. He's 5'6".

Even more staggering.

Pens lead the NHL with 9 (!) misconduct penalties and we are only just half way through the season.. Flyers have 2.

- jak521

Well, I mean, how are they supposed to protect Sutter from the mean Islanders without calling up a 5' 10 minor league scrapper?

Also, what's up with Ivy League grinders? Farnham was a commerce and entrepreneurship major at Brown. Penguin Craig Adams studied history at Harvard. George Parros studied econ at Princeton; Tanner Glass History at Dartmouth. Kevin Westgarth, Darrol Powe, &c. Shouldn't they be advising the governments of emerging nations or inventing a currency which could be used to close the euro gap instead of picking a fight with Euros?

I don't get the method of players getting their NHL call-up and trying to do something really bush league to make the team.

That's a stereotype that Philly brings up every time we play. Just like Philly is a squad of hack goons.

I brought all the trolls out... what have I done?!?

Can at least one Flyer fan agree that your hockey teams objective, for 40+ years, was to play "goon" hockey? That would be a break through and a step in the right direction. Then we can move on to how, like it or not, a part of your fan base still gets off on that?

Only point I was trying to make.

Sorry Pens fans... wanted to talk about the Hawks game too.

Most of us "trolls" post on this board on a daily basis and have semi-civilized conversations. You're (and DComs) are the ones who just run out the "FLYERS ARE ALL GOONS!" flag and then the poop hits the fan.

Up until maybe the mid-90s, the Flyers definitely had a bias towards players who could fight when all other things were near equal. They'd take the 15-goal scorer who could fight over the 22-goal-scorer who was a "finesse" guy. In the past 10 years, they have, for the most part, moved away from that and are trying to establish a team based more on skill that "gooning it up."

I think we have combined what a goon is and what a useless penalty taking moron is. One takes massive liberties against his peers, the other just sucks at hockey.

I think we're kind of proving out the reasoning for the NHL's unwillingness to address these types of games by posting well over 500 entries to a frikin blog.

This kinda stuff stirs emotions, interest, etc.. Exactly the reason why the NHL allows this crap to continue.

Lets face it, many of the hardcore fans expect this kind of activity in their NHL game. Cant wussify the NHL right?

We're all kind of being hypocrites by talking about it.

I would. No sense playing hard and finishing in the middle of the standings. Buffalo should totally be tanking. With McD on the line? Tank it up. Why let Edmonton ruin McD when he could be ruined by Buffalo? It would be way more relevant because the Sabres fans would get about six years of lording McD over the Leafs before he signs somewhere else as a UFA, but it'll be spectacular.

I don't mind hard hits, or even fights that come out of pure emotion. But the stupid cheap/dirty hits that are there solely to hurt people have no place in the league.

And when one fanbase (well, one individual) accuses one team of playing this way without acknowledging that their own team has done the same...well, this is the poop storm that you get.

Can I say the Flyers have never valued fighting over skill? No, I can't. But just because something has happened in the past has nothing to do with things moving forward in the present/future. Can you also acknowledge that the Penguins have, in the past, employed some goons/dirty players (Loney, Ulfie, Kasparitis) and have, at times in the very recent past, had players whose actions fell into that category?

The fact is that ALL TEAMS have had players like that. The skillful Red Wings had guys like Kocur, Probert, and McCarty. The thing is that Flyers fans no longer want the "Broad Street Bullies" label because it quite frankly is no longer true, so yes, we get a bit upset, much like when Flyers fans call Crosby Sidney Crysby or bring up how Mark Recchi called him a baby, etc.

For me, this isn't even really about the Flyers. They're not without their warts, obviously, but the Flyers are hardly a goon squad. poop, we've been watching an awfully soft team so far this year.

What I'm driving at here is that a lot of the media and a good portion of the audible Pens fanbase seems to think the Flyers are the source of all earthly violence, and it's laughably misguided. The Pens own their sins, even if many don't want to accept it.

If the Flyers were even a bubble team, or a good team that's not getting results, I'd want the playoffs. But they're a poorly constructed squad that can't handle much adversity. Aside from a better pick, all I'm hoping to see some of the systemic problems get ironed out.

Absolutely. Any person who says they wouldn't want Crosby on their team is either a misguided fool or a liar.
