by the rules it prolly is a penalty, imo it should not be.
- JoeRussomanno

How about a defenseman punching a player in the face as he skate the puck over the blueline?

Just watched it in slow motion again for the umpteenth time. Rinaldo clearly launches up into the hit and his skates are off the ice before making contact with Letang.

Well so far the defense of Rinaldo jumps from Old Time Hockey to bringing up James Neal to saying he needs to defend himself. Seems like a bit of trolling, which is why I more or less stopped replying directly to it.

If it's actually serious it's dumb.

- Jsaquella

I feel bad for Letang -- and I don't even like the guy. I think he's a tool.

But nobody should get drilled from behind when all he did was chip a puck out of the zone -- it's sad that anyone defends that play

Since January 1st, 2010, The Flyers have had 10 players suspended for a total of 23 games. In the same time frame, the Penguins have had 13 players suspended for a total of 50.

Feel free to throw rocks, but that glass house of yours is going to be awfully chilly when you get done.

I'm not condoning what Rinaldo did, I've shredded him for it since last night and I've also blamed the Flyers for continuing to use him. But to hear Penguins fans and media act so sanctimoniously is a bit ridiculous.

A Penguins' fan, complaining about the Flyers goon tactics is like a Catholic priest complaining about pedophiles

- Jsaquella

You know that I Consistently come down hard on the Pens when they do something dumb. The difference is that the Flyers have made this kind of sh*tshow part of what they are all the way back to 1967. It's the Bullies persona. It's also a sh*t brand of hockey that the Flyers can never purge from their DNA.

I'm just trying to establish some guidelines here for what's a penalty, and what's just a physical game where players need to take their skirts off. Trying to establish where that line is.

The NHL obviously disagrees, as do I.

The hit was late, Rinaldo's should clearly makes contatc with the right side of Letang's back, so it's from behind and into the wall, and with force enough to slam his head into the glass.

Was it as bad as some other hits? No, certainly not. Had Chris VandeVelde delivered the hit, it's still 5 and a game and he probably gets suspended for 2-3 games.

As Rinaldo joking about it, he certainly did chuckle and deliver the "I changed the game" line. I'm admittedly biased against Rinaldo, but not so much that I need to make anything up. It's a guy with a bad history, continuing to do dumb and reckless things. Which is the larger issue to me.

- Jsaquella

To be clear, I agree it was a boarding major and subject to league discipline/suspensions/fines etc. I just disagree with what I'm seeing as a mischaracterization of the matter, as seems to be the case in the various media and web outlets today, many of whom have taken to vilifying the guy with snippets and quotes taken out of context, which promotes the notion that the Rinaldo hit was more than it was and that his post-game "joking around" was some big insult that should make everyone hate him (even more).

I'm more or less with you on his usefulness to the team though. I mean, I do like guys who can bring energy, speed, checking and toughness...they can spark the team at times...but Rinaldo seems to play too recklessly to be an asset on a consistent basis. There have been times...stretches of games in the past, where it seemed he had perhaps tempered himself to the point where he could provide that spark and play on that edge, without going over it. But I think we're seeing that this may not be the case and thus he remains an ongoing risk out there. It would help his cause if he could produce worth a lick, but he can't.

apparently its what your name on the jersey is what you can get away with, not only by league officials who have ratings to keep up but bias fans with no real monetary stake which is pretty sad.

The most ridiculous thing said on here today was that "Letang was admiring his pass" -- hope that isn't Rinaldo's defense during the phone hearing

It's pretty obvious you're the only one who thinks it was a clean hit, including the rest of the Flyers fans here. Is everyone else wrong in your reality?

rinaldo needs to be out of the league. but really this flyers team, at least over the last year or two, hasnt really embodied that mentality.

Honestly, I wish you were right, because the way the Flyers played with fire and emotion in the Pens game is not how they have played for most of the season. For a lot of games, they've been a mediocre team with questionable intensity . I wish that narrative and rhetoric about the team was actually true. Then the Flyers might actually be a decent team.

That's a different subject. I haven't used any player names in the hypotheticals I offered.

Honest question. What determines if the hit was a good hit or not. The actual rules of the game, or an opinion on what the rules should be, and ignoring the actual rules when making a determination on if it was a good hit or not?

It's what I see when the play the Pens. I obviously don't wach the rest of your games (my NHL Season ticket was a casualty of having 2 kids) so I will admit my sample size is small.

a lot of flyers fans think the same of the pens because theyre the only games they watch. the antics really only come out when they play each other. i get to watch more flyers games than i do pens games. and really, if you remove rinaldo, they've had more guys like timonen than they've had stains on the game.

i never said it was a "clean hit" only that its not as egregious as everyone is making it out to be, players take penalties its part of the game, but so taking a few shots here and there. there were worse hits in the game committed by players on this team.
