So you're saying that his 4 Vezina Trophies and 5 Jennings Trophies are all a product of his defense?
- jmatchett383

Yes, that is exactly what I said. Thank you for clarifying that.

I guess he should just deny himself induction into the HHOF, since it was all due to his defense.

Brodeur's save % was never in the elite category, his low goals against is thanks in part to low shot totals against. Brodeur was made better by the system and not the other way around. No one is saying he isn't great or HOF worthy.
He is still a HOF goalie.

Sam Kasan on Coach Johnston: "Every day, the PR staff sends around clips on the team from the local beat writers or anybody that writes about the team. Mike Johnston does not receive those clips. From day 1, he said 'I don't want to receive the clips, I don't want to read what is being said about me because I don't care.' In a sport where so many people and so many egos and so many concerns about what being said, here's a guy that literally gives zero cares. All he cares about is his team, his coaching staff, his players and how they're doing. He's not letting outside distractions tinker with anything he's doing. He's not feeling that outside pressure a lot of people talk about with the Penguins. He doesn't really care about that stuff."

Not super interesting, I would expect that from Johnston. But I actually was surprised just to hear the PR staff sends out everything written about them every day. I thought most players ignored that stuff. Just kind of weird.

McD has never impressed me, he does nothing glaringly impressive. I would take Martin and Tanger both ahead of him.

Volkun did attempt to return, but no team picked him up and he moved back home. Dupuis will return if he is capable, he lives to play the game.

But to be fair... if he doesn't return, how does that affect us cap wise? I am not 100% clear on how that would work for a retirement with money still on the books. If that would give us his space free and clear... hell, I STILL say we are not in need of another winger.

- Guile

I see your viewpoint, for sure. Our wings are fine in the best case scenario and fully healthy. I'm just not betting on that happening. Agree to disagree.

I can't answer that cap question. It'l be interesting to see how it plays out.

If his save percentage was not elite, and his defense was the only reason he had low GAA was low shot totals...then what makes him great? How is he better than Chris Osgood or JS Giguere?

At worst, Goc/Sutter is a push. Why then do the Pens pay Sutter 3.3m and Goc 1m? These are legitimate questions that should be asked.

- Stillson14

Honestly, some of it is based on name Brandon Sutter is a good honest western Canadian boy. He's a decent player, but don't forget, he's a Sutter.

Goc is a European who played in San Jose and Florida.

Good old boy GM's who probably played with Brent or at least one of his brothers.

No whats embarrassing is how the NBS broadcast had to make an on air comment about how McD got burnt numerous times by Geno and Sid, so badly in fact that he had to be bailed out by Moore, on more than one occasion.

So much better than the Rangers. McDonagh is slightly better than Scuderi , that's about it.

We get it. He got beat by Malkin and Crosby. That same play he got bailed out by Moore, right after he broke up a 2 on 1. Doc even went on to say "one bad play does not mean its a bad shift."

You're reaching, really. As I said yesterday, the difference between Letang's mistake and McDonagh's mistake is that one ended up in the back of the net and the other didn't.

Aside from his physical play, his skating, his passing, his shooting, his positioning, and ability to play top minutes every night...not too much.

His skating, positioning, ability to read the play and intercept passes, his angles, his instincts, his consistency, and his reliability.

Yeah, but aside from that, what makes him so good?

P.S. You forgot to mention his physical play and offensive tools.

I have never had an issue being wrong and admitting it, tell me what to look for and I will gladly do it. He just doesn't jump off the TV as a special player.
