even if space wasnt really an issue, i really dont see a lot of appealing options on the horizon i would want to throw much money at anyway.

It doesn't have to be huge upgrades -- they need better penalty killers, more size on the wings for grinding on the fouth line.

Somebody likes Adam Hall doesn't cost a billion dollars. But he does take up a roster spot, which is what they would be clearing

Who cares? Sometimes, we act like the Flyers are the only team that has dead money on the cap or bad contracts.

Almost every single team has a David Clarkson or Victor Stalberg or Bryan Allen. But we're the only fanbase that acts like we cannot possibly get rid of guys like other teams do in order to move forward

- AllInForFlyers

Unless there's a move that fills a hole, like adding a legitimate number one defenseman, or a top line LW that can light it up with Giroux and Voracek, there's no reason to do a buyout now.

If they're going to do a buyout to add Paul Martin or Mike Green as a UFA, is it really worth it? Sure they are upgrades, but neither is really going to solve the issues the team faces. You'd marginally upgrade Streit and have dead cap space for four years to do it. No thanks.

And two of the three bad contracts you mentioned were waived and went unclaimed, leaving their teams stuck with their bad contracts. Allen did get traded for Anaheim to Montreal, but that was a case of a bad contract for a bad contract.

It's not easy to lose a bad contract. Unless you either eat money, or take another bad contract in return

They're last on the PK. They want to play a tighter checking system. They will need to make some roster adjustments to bring in those kind of players

true. but then youre looking more towards taking a step back or two in the immediate future. i dont know if thats necessarily right or wrong, but at least it selects a path and provides an objective.
- stayinthefnnet

I'm fine with a step back, as long as it leads to two or three forward.

I like Mark Streit. He's been 100% as advertized for the Flyers. He's also 37 years old. I think, barring something semi miraculous, the Flyers won't be a serious contender for a couple seasons...so Streit will be 39. Can't count on him still being as effective as now at that age.

In the case of Coburn, it boils down, largely, to what he's looking for in his new deal. Marc Staal just got 6 years, $5.7mm per. If that means Coburn gets $5.5mm, I'm not really eager to re-sign him. He's a really good support D if you have a legit number one, but he can't anchor a defense himself.

macdonald is really the only defenseman im eager to get rid of. i wouldn't mind holding onto coburn and streit. i don't want to give up on luke schenn just yet. have you seen his highlight video when he was in toronto? where's that luke schenn?

trade vinny and grossman for relief, let RJ play out his contract, stay the course.

I honestly don't care how they deal with the bad contracts they have on the books now... I just want them to not add any more avoidable ones in the future.

No more overpayments in UFA, no more extra years to squeeze more guys under the cap, no more guys in their 30's on sunset deals... and can't be afraid to walk away from their own players if they want more than the budget can handle.

Please.

I'm not eager to lose Streit or Coburn. But those two have the most value. They're capable NHL defensemen, but none are irreplaceable.

These tools exist for teams to make roster adjustments and get better. I listed the contracts I did because teams do have them, and address them.

That's vital moving forward. But they also can't be cavalier about how they handle the bad or questionable deals on hand. Can't accept 6 years of a Vinny buyout just so you can add a guy that will get you good enough to be playoff fodder in round one next year, and then make it hard to lock up guys like Voracek , Couturier & Bryaden Schenn when they hit FA.

i put a lot of stock in what some of the players have said when they mentioned they are playing in a way that they are afraid to make any mistakes. it seems to have neutered luke schenn among others

Yup. I'm totally happy with riding these contracts out to get them out of the way asap. As depressing as continuing to watch VL, Umby, etc will be.

They still have them. They're not moving them, they're stuck with them.

If you have one bad or questionable deal, it's not a big deal. But the Flyers have a decent amount.

Vinny, Umberger for sure. MacDonald is at least questionable. Grossmann and Luke Schenn are not good deals for what they bring-even if they were market value when signed.

That's the issue facing the Flyers. They don't have a Clarkson or a Stalberg. They have 3 or 4 of them.

Kings call tomorrow and offer their first for coburn, do you take it?
