Mike Green is starting 62% of his shifts in the offensive zone. Offensive indeed should be gravy.

Mike Green has been in the top 5 Fenclose for defenders the past 2 years. Hint; he didn't start 62% of his zone starts in the offensive zone under Oates. Actually, he was better under Oates. Both those years he played with Orlov, Schmidt, and Hillen. (Who?) he is offensively gifted, and the Caps are deep on the blue line, able to employ Carlson, Alzner, and Orpik ahead of Green in the defensive zone to better keep him fresh for what he does best. No one pretends he's a Norris candidate, but lets not simplify the game with such empty generalizations. What you should really be looking at, is where he finishes his shift, whether or not if he started them in the offensive zone. Anyway, if your defender is able to effectively move the puck out of his zone, and better yet, through the neutral zone, he will collect assists. If the defender is not able to effectively move the puck out of the zone, and better yet, through the neutral zone, he will collect less assists. (This is just one aspect as to how good defending leads to "offensive", to use your word.)
I guess Leetch was just gravy.
