No.
I don't think it's a good deal because I don't think Marc Staal brings enough to the table to get that kind of money. This deal looks good if it's next to Brooks Orpik's, but that's about it.
I think Glen Sather essentially paid market price for his own defender, which is a tick in the loss column for the GM. Anton Stralman is a better defender than Marc Staal and Sather let him away to Tampa last year at over a million dollars less per season. - mames11

none of these guys understand how the Rangers operate, or acknowledge that they have made the playoffs every year since the first lockout except for one and why they have won 6 playoff series the last 3 years.
Ryan McDonagh missed the last 5 games of the regular season last year, his first game back was game 1 of the 1st round against the Flyers and was a shell of himself in that round. The Rangers dont get past the Flyers without Staal who was a rock that whole series, a +6 for the series and scored a huge goal in the pivotal game 5.
just look at Corsi and don't watch the games and pretend you are experts, it's fine.

Since I'm the only one here defending anything. Can we all just admit, love or hate it, Marc Staal has become the highest paid defensive defenseman in the NHL? |

I don't exactly consider him an offensive defenseman. |

Well 4 guys who are supposed blogging geniuses only explanation for why this is a bad deal is duhhhhhhh Corsi says so.
No talk about the Rangers playoff success the past few years. No talk about how bad the Rangers looked in the 2013 2nd round vs the Bruins without Staal because of his eye injury. I think this Corsi thing has stopped people from writing intelligent hockey blogs. Nobody thinks anymore. |

Why does Lundqvist's GF% and CF% go up when Staal is not on the ice? |

Because when Staal is not on the ice, Crosby/Giroux/Ovechkin/Perry/Stamkos are not on the ice. |

Crosby only scored twice vs the Rangers last year in the 7 game second round series and the Pittsburgh media and fans are still complaining about the treatment Staal gave Crosby |

Yea, Staal definitely shutdown Crosby. Turned him completely invisible. |

Nah. The matchup in the Pens series was Staal vs Crosby and McDonagh vs Malkin.
AV doesn't really match lines too much though defensively. He usually just makes sure to have either McDonagh's line or Staal's line out there against the top line of the other team.
Edit: Is there a site that shows these numbers?
Edit 2: I was searching for some site that shows this but I found this article for now:
http://www.broadstreethoc...ysis-flyers-playoffs-2014
"The Rangers top two defensive units, Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi and Marc Staal-Anton Stralman, have gone up against Giroux's line almost equally and have had a lot of success in shutting Giroux and his linemates down."
Just illustrates my point that AV doesn't really match defensive lines besides having Staal or McDonagh out there against the top players. |

I was basing it on their 2012-2014 opponent's ice times. Not saying Staal is a bad player but if I was a NYR fan I would much rather it be a 4 year deal. |

4 year deal would be nice, but it's the cost of doing business I guess. As a UFA, he obviously had the leverage and likely left $500k+ a year on the table.
Also, numbers from 2012 and 2013 are skewed because of his injuries. Obviously they can't be ignored but I think those injuries should definitely be considered as a major factor in why his numbers suck those years. |
