In reality though thats only the 2nd stupid penalty of the season downie took. The other was also against the Islanders I believe. So thats a total of 2 in 40 some games from the guy that "takes to many stupid penalties.
- Grinder47

think your definition of stupid penalty differs from mine.

Honestly, your team would be far better off without him. Great game to watch, both teams went back and forth. Would be a fantastic playoff series again.

Where's the dude who was defending downie earlier?
- Isles_since_6

I was earlier today, and wasn't able to watch the game tonight. Don't know what happened yet. Hopefully the bullpoop can be cleared up in the room.

My entire point was spelled out earlier and I still stand by it. He obviously needs to pick his spots though. Huge win for the Isles!

They didn't lose that game because of reffing. They lost it because the Pens failed to play responsible hockey late in a tie game. If this team wants to go anywhere, they have to develop that killer instinct......which also involves making the right choices even if they sacrifice the occasional scoring chance.

NHL reffing is and has always been bad. It was an obvious penalty, but Malkin did the same thing to JT....that wasn't called either.

- madmike71

Honestly believe knocking a stick from a players hand is called defence.....and breaking it is a slash..just my opinion...ive always felt if a player cannot hold onto his stick he doesnt deserve the puck anyways....of course if u hit the hands its a slash in both cases. Id argue malkin didn't hit the hands and was not even as close to as malicious as the one on downie. Furthermore u get a lil ticky tack hook on the hands in the first period called and then his crap allowed in the third...the nhl is just flat out pathetic on calls

Downie doesn't make this team but he certainly could break this team. A play like that could potentially lose a series in the playoffs.
- all-pgh

Gimme a break the Isles are doing just fine with a bonehead like Martin who loses it too. Every team has a guy like that. They are the top 2 teams in the East.

You'll never see Martin do what Downie did there. So funny how you have no idea what kind of player Martin is. Downie he is not.

disagree here.

downie is a good hockey player. he has the talent and the grit, he sometimes lacks the intelligence.

he brings the intensity. he sticks up for teammates which is something that has been lacking for the pens in recent years.

he has calmed down in the last 2 weeks or so but tonight was inexcusable. stupid play that might not have cost your team the game, but it certainly cost them a chance at coming back.

i have no problem with Downie... especially at 1 million.

good game tonight. crowd was great and it was a fun atmosphere.

and to be honest, you guys can have the division title for a couple of reasons.

1) would be nice for the penguins to slide into the playoffs without the focus on them. last few years they've felt the heat. would be nice like in 09 where they just slide in with home ice in round 1, settle down, get in the groove and carry themselves. you guys can have the heat and the expectations.

2) Looking at the standings, real possibility Boston finishes in the second wild card spot and i think the metro's division winner beats out the atlantic's so i wouldnt fancy a 1st round matchup with Boston. Would much rather play a Rangers team or a Washington over a team like Boston, Detroit, or Montreal.

big thing for the penguins tonight was the PP finally clicking and Malkin and Crosby play having great games.

will be fun down the stretch. finally nice to have some competition for the division.

Scuds wasn't good, but the guys that make the big bucks have all of the minuses. Sid -2 on a 3 point night. Kunitz -3. Sometimes +/- is meaningless, but those guys earned their minuses tonight.

I agree with your thoughts on playoff opponents, I really think if healthy you guys could beat the caps, might be undecided about the Rangers. I think at some point if we can win a round that we're going to meet up.

i think if you guys kept your heads, which i have no reason to believe you wouldn't, i think you could take it to boston. i think that with our history with them and just our style, we wouldnt be as great of a matchup.

Capitals wouldn't worry me as much. they're a decent team but I'm not a fan of Trotz. Plus I know Crosby and Malkin would have a field day against Oprik.

Rangers are a sneaky team that can be streaky. if you get the team that hasnt been good, it would be a quick series. if you get the team that's been playing well over the last few months, they could easily take it to either one of us.

Haters are going to hate & if you read this thread enough it's either Downie, Scuds, or Adams. You want to say in a 60 minute team game that 1 player caused the loss go & play lawn bowls!

Looks like you guys are officially top of the tree so start looking over your shoulder now because Downie & co are coming.

Tough to predict but I think it's going to be someone from the metro in the finals
