And Pat Boutette, Michel Dion, Pat Price, Gary Rissling... - Emperor Filonius
Rissling was a nut case.
I remember being at the game when Michel Dion got a puck right between the eyes. He fell straight back, but still finished the period. The masks back in those days didn't help much, but without it .he may have been killed. |

What's a fact is that Boychuk is a great defenseman and all the talk about him being nothing more than a 2nd pairing guy that was successful only because he played in Bostons system was false. He's a top pairing guy and a premier shutdown defenseman. He is gonna get paid. |

Yes...like the NYR dude said, "Heard the same poop regarding Vanek last year." So yes, I was talking about Vanek. With respect to Boychuk, it's called a comparison. It's when you take one situation (Vanek last year) and then compare it to a similar situation (Boychuk this year). Reading comprehension: Get into it. - jmatchett383
Except nobody heard any such thing about Vanek where as a few of us have heard the same thing boychuk. That was my point. So its acutally not a really good comparison |

never a difference maker, if he ever were to play in a big game im not sure hed deliver, hes just an easy guy to play against, all the skill and talent offensively but like I said little to no heart and currently very expensive - JLT168

If you wanna talk about "big games" just look at him in the ECF last year. No goals, 2 assists, 7 shots on goal, and a -4 in 6 games. |

It's somewhere in between. He's not as offensive as Martin, but he is more mobile and is MUCH better with the puck than Orpik was. - jmatchett383
Fair enough. I think staals inconsistent possession stats have a lot to do with his eye injury and concussion. Both those dips in the chart happened during those 2 injuries. |

I didnt love brooksy, though im probably still biased, I think staal is basically a bigger version of orpik, neither of them have offensive skill, although both can make the breakout pass, staal does seem to go into the offesnive zone occasionally where brooksy never would unless it was a quick pinch...orpik used to go for the bigger hits which sometimes took him out of the play, I dont really recall seeing stall do that, but I think brooks is the better skater...
similiar to martin as well...both bigger guys, he certainly is more physical then martin, but not as physical as brooks was in his prime...out of those 3, id probably rank martin and staal pretty close and brooks behind them both, but id say staal is more like a combination of the both of them, martin has very little offensive upside...besides making good passes |

I don't think I'd call him a top pairing defenseman or a "premier' shutdown defenseman. Well, actually, I think that he can play on a legit top pair, but he'd never be an anchor. Would be a fantastic compliment. Also, I think he's a very good shutdown defenseman, but not "premier."
Then again, he's better than any defenseman the Flyers have. |

He looks like he's either:
a) poopting his pants
b) Watching someone get mauled by a bear
c) Strung out on coke
Then again, since the 3 aren't mutually independent, it could be a combo. |

Absolutely. And he'd be even more so one for the Flyers. But put him on, say, Chicago, and he's a 2nd pair guy. Or LA, or St. Louis, etc. But yes, on any team that doesn't have those 2 top-pairing guys, he's at least a good top-pair compliment. |

Yeah. I wouldn't say he's an elite top pairing defenseman but there's not many of them around. I would say he's a top pairing D man none the less. There's not enough Doughtys and Webers around to make it a viable debate really. I will say I'm extremely happy to have him as our top pairing he's excellent in just about every situation and he was extremely underrated coming over which most of us suspected bcs of his role on the Bruins.
His shot on the PP alone has been tremendous for us without even touching on his physicality and shut down capabilities. Guy is awesome. |

I think the Staal contract is closer to Paul Martin 2.0 than Brooks Orpik 2.0. - rangerdanger94

That already happened. His name is Andrew MacDonald. |
