No matter how elite in talent that defender is that they would draft in the next two drafts, that player is not going to be elite as an NHL defenseman in that time span. Looking at closer to 5 years for that player to get to that point. Look at Seth Jones and how highly touted he was. Not even close to being an elite defenseman in the NHL, at this point.

The really great defenders start putting it together by the end of their 3rd season. So you are right they won't be playing at a Norris level but could put together a couple of months of elite play in a playoff run. Ussually the 4th year it all comes together. But the Flyers have some possible elite defenders in the system now. So 2017-2018:
Morin: possible 3rd season in NHL
Ghost: possible 3rd season
Sanheim:possible 2nd season
They won't win the cup but could be one of those young teams to go a round or two and comes back the next year as a favorite. |

It's different for every player. 5 years is a realistic expectation for any high draft pick defenseman to get to the point of being a top pair defenseman on a contender. Morin is likely going to need some AHL time, then NHL development time. Sanheim is likely to be in Juniors again next season, then possibly AHL time also. Gostisbehere may make the team next year, but still needs a lot of development time. Having those players playing at an elite level to make the Flyers a contender in 17/18 is not very realistic. They can contribute before then and help the team, but to become true top pairing player on a contender, is going to take some time. |
