No. The problem is that Flyers management was actually trying to ice a competitive team. Sixers' management knew what it was doing, and they're just not doing it enough. - jmatchett383
Kind of... Holmgren tried. Hextall knew what was up...
I think the Hextall hammer will come down hard this off-season. Expect half this roster to be different by next season. |

it would explain a lot i guess. It is remarkable. Can't imagine skating in the NHL with a high ankle sprain. - nastyflyergirl
I had one and couldn't walk without crutches or a boot for almost 2 months.

I think theres a misconception that the Sixers put together a team of FAs who were just bad at basketball. That's not the case. They have a better plan in place than anything I've seen from the Flyers lately. |

Yep, I know he (and most hockey players) downplayed the injury and didnt want to "make excuses", but even he said he should have shut it down for a bit.
Frankly I cant believe he was able to play at all. WHile you cant do more damage to the injured area, you CAN damage other areas of your body compensating.
I admire hockey players ability and need to play through injuries, but sometimes its just a stupid decision. Especially early in a season. Read should have shut down instead of hurting the team.

But that's what he said: trading players to make the on-ice product bad to lose more. - jmatchett383
I don't think trading off a veteran or two, to acquire future assets when your team is out of the playoff picture is tanking. I see it as a normal part of managing a team. The motivation for making the moves is to improve the team in the future, rather then to purposely try and lose. |

I don't know about half, that's a lot, but I do think some changes will be made for sure. I also think there's going to be a lot of disapointed fans around the trade deadline. I don't think the Flyers are going to do, or be able to do what a lot of fans want them to do. |

I don't think it will be THAT extreme. I just looked, and even after 06/07 (the worst season in franchise history) they only moved 7 players out of the 25 who ended the season on the roster or injured. But I think they could replace maybe 5-8 players when all is said and done. |

I thought the idea was to put together the worst team in the league to acquire the #1 overall pick. |

didnt they have something like 3 first round picks on the active roster?
in a league with only 2 rounds, thats damn near impossible to achieve. |

Yeah...now, if we're talking about 7 players from right now, with the TDL to come, I could see that. Maybe 2-3 trades at the TDL and a few trades (or buyouts) in the summer. But to make 7 moves in one summer is pretty damn impressive. |

Do you remember how man in season moves they made the second half of the season? I don't. Just thinking the number could be higher than 7 if you count in season moves that helped purge the roster. I also think 7 players is a lot. |

They moved (I think) Forsberg, Robitaille, Calder, Zhitnik, and Meyer. Nedved was demoted to the AHL. |

I won't be disappointed, per se, if they bring back, say, Coburn. Because Coburn playing well is something that this team could really have used.
But yeah, I will be disappointed if they don't find a way to make 4-6 moves -- this roster can't look the same next season. You will have missed the playoffs two of the last three seasons and finished seventh the year you did make it.
You can't bring the same team back and call this year an aberration. Other teams are getting better, and the parity is too great, to ice this roster for another go-round and expect the results to be different.
Because they won't be.

I think they are handcuffed by poor contracts sadly. I agree it will be more like 4 maybe 5 at the most. Could be as low as 3. My picks would be (takes out magic 8 ball):
1. Emery (easy pick)
2. VL (I think they find a taker during the offseason but have to add picks)
3. Grossman (redundant with Shenn and Shultz)
4. Streit (wild card, unlikely, but I think they should as he may never have higher value)
Edit: CC will not be returning.
Anyone else want to play psychic? |
