It's coming from Madden, who I trust about as much as I can throw him, which is not at all because he's fat.
Perfect example of sourceless conjecture being recycled as fact.
I'm not a doctor, I don't play one on TV, and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but if he's out for the year, I'd think that rehab instead of surgery would be a bad idea. - hardnosed
I am assuming if they are ruling him out for the year then he is having the surgery. Just my thoughts. |

I guess if what Madden is saying is true and Maatta is done for the year. Then Pouliot is going down so that a lesser guy can come up and sit in the press box and the Pens then roll with:
Letang - Martin
Ehrhoff - Bortuzzo
Scuderi - Despres - PensFan1103
Yes... though i wish they would keep Pouliot or Harrington up and demote Scuds or Bortz to 7th d man |

He's one of the most consistent sources. - HopintheCordoba
Five years ago I might have agreed with you. But journalists are now in competition with unsourced bloggers, and they have to get clicks to stay relevant, which has meant that formerly reputable hockey guys will now peddle loosely sourced reports in order to gain those precious clicks.

You're not off base. In some respects I agree. Issue is that he isn't just some journalist in print. That's part of his gig. He's a major television guy as well. Much like Dreger or McKenzie. I happen to hold all 3 in high regard but Friedman gets caught with his pants down the least if you ask me.
Maybe that means nothing, but I usually see him carrying a lot of weight because of his accuracy. He's not the type to just look for interest. |

It was actually 17:55 in the third period. so he wasn't on the ice for the final 2:05 and up 3-1. It wasn't the best idea for Weber, but it looks like he felt a little better after doing it. lol
I don't think I would want to be hit in the head by a Weber right hook. - currphij
Weber might punch you in the head, Cooke will make you spend the rest of your life in a dark room. Which is more scary? |

Like I said, I had less issue with what Friedman reported and more of an issue with how his carefully parsed report was taken up and run with by others.
I do agree that those 3 (as far as national reporters) are about the best out there in terms of reliability. I don't pay much attention to those who Twit and Twat except on deadline day and July 1st, when I check out Dreger and McKenzie's feeds, because they tend to break signings before anyone else. |

Can I see some examples of things Madden reports that discredit him so much? Last week he said Williams for Martin "likely". Today he said Maatta "most likely" done for the season. My point is this guy is in the Pens locker room on a daily basis, I'd assume he has some solid contacts around the Pens. He is a loud mouth, which I like about him. People quoting The Fan should be ashamed as a hockey fan. Those guys care about hockey only when the stillers and the one season wonders are done. |

Time for Despres to make the jump to top 4 with Maatta in serious doubt. Can't have Bortuzzo up there if this is the case.
Also, love the Malkin Bennett combo. Chemistry is instant, skill set complimentary, good stuff to watch. |

Is he anymore? I know he used to be, but I thought he was pretty much persona non grata after his dustups with the Steelers over the years, and that it had some carryover with the Penguins. That said, hockey press credentials are infinitely easier to come by than NHL press credentials.
Dude was in Star Wars, so that's good I guess.

If Maatta is indeed out for the year, no way they trade P Mart then. Just cant do it. Not even for Williams. |

Well its pretty safe to say Martin isnt going anywhere now. The roster we have now will be the same after the deadline. No more additions or subtractions... |

For (frank)s sake this team cannot catch a break. Come playoffs they better not play scuds and bortuzzo in the same games or our D is significantly less deep than it seemed at the beginning of the year. |

Well, Molinari reporting it lends more credence.

But I'm still not going to be sold on it until a paid employee of the team says it's true. - hardnosed
It's on the Pens website. The Trib is reported as the source. |

I'm not seeing it on the actual website. Their site of course link to the Trib, and they have a beefier article than Molinari's:
http://triblive.com/sport...ce-penguins#axzz3Of44Jep7
Lots of word parsing in that one, though.
In any event, the Penguins will likely have to address the issue head-on tomorrow. |

Yes, I would imagine so. I just hope the poor guy can be fixed in the proper way. He is so young. |

I don't know why you all sound surprised Maatta is done for the year.
He came back 3 weeks early, he hurt it before the cancer surgery, it wasn't coming back from the cancer operation that saw his play regress, it was his shoulder.
Since he was taken off the active roster the team has had to decide if continuing rehab will get him through the season with no ill affect to his long term health, or just go straight to surgery.
This team has shown a lack balls to tell it's players to wait till they are 98% right. |
