WHO THE HELL CARES WHAT JOE JERWA WOULD DO!?!? |

I'd do Jagr for like Ruopp.
Williams for Martin....Im fine with it, I'm also fine with Martin finishing here. When healthy this team will be pretty solid. - sammy87
If your going to trade an ECHL player for an all time great..might as well as give them another ECHL player.. |

christian erhoff on the fan saying he doesnt plan to have contract discussions this season. for what its worth. reasonably possible pens lose martin and cristian this off season. DP / BD / SH better step up. Give em the Despres treatemnt Johnston! Make them man up.
I just realized I have to be on the look out for the DP and DP DP play over the next couple seasons! |

I am trying to not read into his comments too much. He doesn't want to talk a contract during the season, so do numerous players. I think that is just how he operates, and that rumor before the season had most of us too much on board with him extending ASAP, myself included.
Contracts should be handled after the season, lets go with he means simply that rather than go overboard again on his contract stuff. |

Take them for both a 7th round pick and if the Sabres retain 99% of their salary |

For you guys that construct lineups on here, a defense without Paul Martin compared to a defense with him is considerably weaker, especially without Maata who can't be relied on right now. You don't win Cups like that.
The offense will come around when the guys get healthy; if they don't get healthy then there's no Cup. The defense should stay exactly where they're at. |

Agreed on all this!!! I want to keep Martin through the end of the playoffs.... However if JR is considering the deal he must be atleast optimistic regarding Maatta's status |

He never said he wasnt interested in resigning, just that he wouldnt do it during the season. he might be back. but I do think it lends some credence to the fact that this years deal was about raising his value from a buyout d-man on a bad team to a top 4 on a cup contender. he might sign but the pens will have to pay... at least thats how it looks to me. might be better to rely on the youngins and do a mid season trade for a d-man and spend that money on the forwards. |

There also seem to be a few more high quality UFA Dmen available this offseason than in past seasons.
Z. Michalek, Oduya, Meszaros, Methot, Ehrhoff, Martin, Boychuk, Green, M. Staal, Franson, and Petry are all under 35 & pending UFA's. Seems like more than in past years to me. |

A few of those will resign between now and free agency though, so it won't be that big of a list. |

True, but still last season it was Niskanen, Orpik, Ehrhoff, & Stralman. Can't think of anyone else under 35 who got more than $4M/yr. I can see almost all of the players on my prior list getting that or more depending on the term. Just saying there is likley to be more Top-4 Dman available this offseason than last offseason.

As much as i like Williams, i can't see the Kings trading him right now with Pearson going down. That doesn't mean a deal couldn't be made. I think with the limited market for D-men right now, you can sell high with Martin and get a good deal, plus free up cap space to go after a rental.
Martin to LA for Zykov and a 2nd or 3rd. Then flip that pick and one of our middle tier d-prospects for Jagr. Penguins would then get their top 6 forward, and a top 6 forward prospect who isn't far away from playing in the NHL. - cap1681
Kings aren't going to trade their top offensive prospect for a rental. Sorry. |

Interesting. Why Now? Maybe some news on the Maatta front? Harrington and Dumoulin were already sent down, weren't they? So that would leave us with 6 defensemen for the time being if Maatta wasn't back? |

It would seem that way with Maatta, but I remember something from a few days ago that Maatta still had a ways to go... |

Yeah, he said that this morning on "The Fan", which was a little deflating. I was hoping they would be back sooner than 3 more weeks. |

Its not like they can't call someone back up if needed. Its better for him to play in WBS than rot in the Pitt press box

Yeah, I guess we are rolling with 6 D as of now. Better than him sitting in the booth though |
