It's because people still look at archaic stats like GAA as a barometer of how well a goalie is playing. If Mason played for LA, people would be talking about how great he is and what a turnaround he's made.
- PhillySportsGuy

I agree. What they need to do is to take the number of starts he has, divide by the number of letters in his last name, multiply it by the number of times he makes a save on the PK, subtract the ratio of saves made per game to the length of his goal stick, and put it in pie graph form. Then we can fully and properly evaluate him.

I'm kinda worried that Brayden Schenn "is what he is" and will get no better.

Sean Couturier's usage is still highly questionable to me.

First SO win in over a year. I'm still in shock that they won, especially after Coots rang it off the post.

Rinaldo. He shouldn't even be in the league.

Thats why hes not a gm or coach and is more of a tv "personality".

Nonis was likely on borrowed time the second Shanahan took that job.
- johndewar

i think shanahan is committed to bring Babcock in for both coach/gm.

I feel Couturier is a capable playmaker if used from the right half way but Vinny is also effective there because of his shot. For me, it's what to do near the blue line as Del Zotto comes in and out of the line up. Also why isn't Raffl on the PP. I feel he could easily take over for Umberger downlow and do a better job. If Berube believea Raffl will be a scorer in this league, you've got to give him the opportunities.

They could change personell around, but they still lack a QB and puck distributor for that unit. They should really just concentrate on shooting and crashing the net on that unit, rather then trying to make passing plays.

I lost a lot of respect for him when he said that. The only things that have gone right are Mason and the top line. He could have taken a stab at anything else and been within reason.
- PhillySportsGuy

He recently said it again, too. Said it during the summer (even after Mason nearly stole that playoff series against the Rangers) and said it again just recently in an NJ.com interview.

Hextall is aware that the mix of player needs to be tweaked. You can never have too many centers, and that's one of the strengths of the team. The problem is that Laughton clearly is not ready to center a scoring line, and the Couturier/Read tandem is not producing enough at ES.
- MJL

I'm glad someone else said something first. I'm a little tired of watching Laughton play in the top six and trying little tricks that only worked at the junior level just to get schooled. His timing with the little plays are off. If he expects one thing to happen, he doesn't recover well if it doesn't workout. I'm not sure how else to handle him outside of put him on the fourth line.

I agree, but to do that, you need to be able to get shots through to the net, something the entire team has struggled with since Kimmo left.

Jeremy Roenick, OTOH, still insists that Mason is part of the problem because he's just "an average goalie" and not someone who steals games.
- bmeltzer

I can't believe he would say that. I will always love that OT goal in Toronto but his comment about Mason is just ridiculous

Crashing the net has been a successful motto for this team since forever. What happen?

"an average goalie" with stats comparable to "Elite" goaltenders all while playing behind arguably the leagues worst defense.

Any list with Crouse that high is suspect. Above Hanafin, Strome and Marner? No way.

I think the setup is ok. Seems like every team runs some variation of it. Even Team Canada ran the same umbrella setup. I would like to see a little more movement though.
- PhillySportsGuy

The Red Wings' PP is interesting. Everyone is moving. Everyone takes over for the next guy as they shift around. However they manage and carry the puck better then most.

I think it was pretty coy of Shanny to keep Nonis and Carlyle around while he sorts out the mess, which could take awhile... two automatic fall guys to dump on the slab.

I suppose this is true but the Flyers have always had a decent PP regardless of set up. I believe it was Laviolette who brought us the Umbrella. Timonen and Richards at the points weren't working in Umbrella formation.
