Watching him lumber around the ice made me wonder why they let him play. On the other hand, I don't think he can make the injury worse by playing, so I guess it doesn't matter. He was still very effective.

Sitting Giroux is basically like conceding losses at this point. They rely on him to preform miracles for this team.

He almost did, actually. He was bothered by it, but still had some impact. Voracek, on the other hand...my God. He's able to create offense out of thin air it seems.

The Flyers' PK at home is fine (84.5 percent on the season to date). It's on the road where the PK has been a disaster.
- bmeltzer

Their PP on the road isn't so hot either. I think it will balance out eventually. Unless it's completely in their heads.

The Flyers have really only one consistent offensive line, and that's the top line with Giroux and Voracek. Berube has been using that pair, and that line to try and get other players going offensively. He put Read up there to try and get him going offensively, and now he's trying to spark plug Schenn who hasn't scored a goal in 12 games, going. It's a reasonable strategy.
- MJL

The strategy brings out another frustration in me. We had many natural Left Wing players we just decided to let walk or give away and now we're weak at that position all throughout the line. Off course many will blame Holmgren and I suppose we can start there but Hextall's first move was to trade away a top line Left Winger. Just this idea of drafting centers and seeing what sticks on wing really pisses me off.

The good writers recognize the problems with this team. You can watch 1 period and recognize the problems.
- PhillySportsGuy

Jeremy Roenick, OTOH, still insists that Mason is part of the problem because he's just "an average goalie" and not someone who steals games.

A bit off topic: Anyone see the video of Phil Kessel getting snippy with a reporter?:

He tailed off towards the end of that road trip a bit. Constantly seeing top pairings and still being expected to carry the team offensively probably had something to do with it.

He looked back to his usual self last night. Thought he was far and away the best player on the ice.

I lost a lot of respect for him when he said that. The only things that have gone right are Mason and the top line. He could have taken a stab at anything else and been within reason.

I'd like to see some sort of different approach to the PP, at least on the second unit. The Umbrella doesn't look so hot with that set up, especially with a left handed shooter working the left half wall.

I really hope the skate incidents stop happening. Last night was another scary incident that could've been real bad. Four incidents in the last week or so. Enough already.

The NHL will have to take this safety matter seriously. Replace the sharp metal skates with rubber or plastic spikes. Replace the ice with artifical or natural turf, and increase the number of players on each side from 6 to 11. Eliminate sticks, goals, and pucks, and replace them with an oval-shaped pigskin which must be moved laterally across a field to score.

Hextall is aware that the mix of player needs to be tweaked. You can never have too many centers, and that's one of the strengths of the team. The problem is that Laughton clearly is not ready to center a scoring line, and the Couturier/Read tandem is not producing enough at ES.

I don't think the strategy is the issue, as much as the 2nd unit lacks a catalyst and playmaker.

Agreed. For Mason isn't top ten in the league but have much bigger issues than goaltending.

I had a buddy offer me tickets to Toronto/Philly tickets, she brought up goaltending as our issue because it has been for years. As I was leaving Joe Louis in Detroit, a Wings said to me Good Game but goaltending is your issue and has been for years.

I think the setup is ok. Seems like every team runs some variation of it. Even Team Canada ran the same umbrella setup. I would like to see a little more movement though.

Right.

So how much autonomy does Nonis have to make deals?

How much does Shanahan micromanage the day to day operations, if at all?

- johndewar

im guessing that shanahan is evaluating. Hell get rid of Nonis

It's because people still look at archaic stats like GAA as a barometer of how well a goalie is playing. If Mason played for LA, people would be talking about how great he is and what a turnaround he's made.

I feel Couturier is a capable playmaker if used from the right half way but Vinny is also effective there because of his shot. For me, it's what to do near the blue line as Del Zotto comes in and out of the line up. Also why isn't Raffl on the PP. I feel he could easily take over for Umberger downlow and do a better job. If Berube believea Raffl will be a scorer in this league, you've got to give him the opportunities.

They should, but that isn't going to help skates flying up around players faces. Brayden Schenn came dangerously close to a real serious injury last night. Scary as hell.
