With the growing list of names they currently have, this coaching search has the same feel to it that the Sabres GM search did. I have a feeling it take a bit before we know. I think it'll get resolved faster than the Sabres GM one did, just because of the nature of the NFL, but you can see how the ownership style is the same with both teams right now.

good point...pegula should have a good feel for how coaches interview

It's much different than the way things were done here before. I don't remember for sure, but it seems to me that whenever there was a coaching vacancy before, they would talk to maybe 3 guys and pick from there. It always seemed like they had their guy in mind already but interviewed a couple others just to make it look like they weren't sure.

I think you're right...I hope it's different now...if they make the right move now at coach, it could break the cycle they've been in

Not until I see Zadorov prove he's the top pairing defensemen everyone has penciled him in to be.

Our depth defensively is weak, especially if you trade him

I don't think they start with Nyquist, imo.

They do have a glut of nice young forwards, though. Roster and non roster players. These two teams seem, on paper, like they'd be good trade partners.

Holland probably speaks "a different language".

I don't think they will either. All I am saying is that, looking what Detroit has, the only player I think can make an equal impact on their roster is Nyquist. If they want to offer anything other than that, I'm getting better value from services rendered.

Myers was very good his first year and then struggled for the next 3 or so. No guarantee that doesn't happen to Risto and/or Zadorov.

There's very little depth in the system behind these guys as well at this point and that needs to be taken into consideration as well.

Without Myers

You would need Pysyk and McCabe to turn out to be top 4 NHL defensemen and Zadorov and Risto to be top 2, to have a formidable blue line.

Sure we could sign a FA or make a trade, but wouldn't it make for sense to keep the guy they spent 6 years developing?

And I know you feel the same... Just think trading him becomes a lateral move at best

pysyk is nhl-ready and can hold down a top-four slot
rudy is almost ready
McCabe needs time but I believe he could learn on the fly

And behind them there's......

Which is the problem. If for any reason one of these guys don't live up to their expectations that leaves us very, very thin. And yes, there are usually guys available in the FA market each year, but the overall depth is very shallow in the D department right now.

totally agree...that's another reason why myers is important to the team and why it should take a king's ransom for murray to move him

Just all depends on what you value mantha at. Where do you see him in 2-3 years?

Exactly. And just think, this is the situation now and many around here were upset when they drafted Zadorov instead of a forward because they said we already had too many D.

IMO we can find our own version of Mantha elsewhere.

Finding another 24 year old, locked up for 4 years defensemen who can handle top pair responsibilities is a harder find
