Laughton out w an injury. Waste of oxygen back in the lineup. Giroux game time decision if he can't go, Flyers dress 7 awful dmen, instead of 6.

I can't wait until they fire Berube, but it's not as simple as having no energy or effort. It's largely an execution issue and the impact that has on all other facets of the game.

You can have Anthony Robbins as a coach, but if he's playing a defenseman who can't execute an outlet pass or maintain defensive coverage, guys on the team are going to see a dip in confidence, in energy and in most cases it will lead to more mistakes and errors.

Outside of icing players who can execute better, there's nothing a coach can do. If a team doesn't have confidence, it's going to look like it has no energy. Fact of life

- Jsaquella

The question I would have is why this team would have no confidence playing against Carolina? Why against a team it should be better then, and is more talented then, they come out and play a first period that was quite frankly disgusting in terms of energy, and intensity. The 2nd period wasn't much better. They need to score a goal like the 4th line did in the 3rd period to gain confidence?
There's no way it's largely an execution issue. It's a mental issue. This same team under this same coach, last season when he took over, played solid hockey. With largely the same lineup minus Timonen. Timonen is a good player, but at 39 he's not the difference in why this team has fallen so far and is woefully underachieving this season. Neither is Hartnell. Execution is certainly part of it, but other issues are much, much bigger that are plaguing this team. No reason for them to come out and get outplayed by a weaker team.
The mental issues are the cause of the execution issues, not the other way around in my opinion.

We have all seen lesser teams work better together and that is what is most problematic /aggravating along with the people he dresses and who he sits and allotment of ice time. Look at the Jets resurgence this year with Paul Maurice.
I saw them lose to Tampa in the Peg in late October, but they have certainly got themselves well above 500. I am not saying their roster is overall lesser, but on paper which roster would you want?

- Steelmanpa

The Jets actually have some good players. It's surprising, to an extent, how they were so bad for so long.

Obviously, I'd take Giroux & Voracek over anyone on their roster, but after that it's a toss up with a few obvious exceptions, like Mason over Pavelec

The Flyers roster is equally as talented at the Jets roster, if not more talented.

If Giroux plays, #Flyers new second line will be BSchenn centering Simmonds and Rinaldo. Chief wants to keep Vinny on 4th line.

Both Schenns and Coburn to the Oil for PIT's 2015 1st, and EDM's 2016 1st*,Marincin and whatever garbage they want to send back our way.

* - maybe they think the trade will make them better, lol, like Kessel

Lack of confidence, and hesitation leading to bad decisions. When a player or a team thinks the game too much instead of just reacting, they play slower, and with less energy. They make bad passes, and pass the puck too much, trying to make the perfect play all the time.

Imagine a good deal of that is a lack of trust/confidence in each other. The good players know that no matter how much good they can do themselves, the guys coming behind them are liable to (frank) it all up. Its a depth of talent issue, IMO.

I don't think it has anything to do with lack of trust and confidence in each other. I think for a losing team, that they are still a close knit bunch. There is no doubt that talent and depth is part of it, but that is what should keep them from being a contender. This team with it's roster should be in the playoff hunt if they'd play up to their capabilities in my opinion. This team should be much better then they are, and it's annoying as hell. They have good players, but they just aren't a very good team this season. It's mostly mental with this team, IMO, and they can't seem to get out of it.

The Canes first goal is a perfect example, Streit makes a nice spin to get some room, instead of passing it right away or throwing it on net, he holds the puck and winds up below the goal line in no man's land. Mental error there. Coburn's biggest issue this year is trying to do too much instead of simplifying and playing his game. This team refuses to just shoot the puck and get the puck to the net. They pass up shot after shot. They are hesitant defensively leading to extended time defending, as if they are afraid they'll get beat. This team just needs to forget about, pin their ears back, and just skate and play. Just like Lecavalier did on the rush to set up the lone Flyers goal. Just like Giroux and Voracek have been doing all season. That's what this team does late in games when they're behind, they just skate and play. When they do that, they can be a good team.

Yeah, there's probably 3 guys on the Jets D I take before anyone on the Flyers D, and that's off the top of my head.

They have a huge pool of prospects. Ehlers is a beast. Morrissey, Petan, Comrie, Glover, Kitchon.

How does a group of players lose confidence? By losing games. By being unable to execute simple, basic hockey plays.

Poor coverage, dumb penalties, bad turnovers, being unable to complete a simple outlet pass, unforced errors like not gaining the red line prior to dumping a puck...stuff that happens to the Flyers game in and game out.

The Flyers do as much to beat themselves as their opponents do on most evenings. That wears on a team mentally. And when the inability to execute gets inside a team's head, it leads to mental mistakes, because you get to the point where you expect to fail.

So glad Berube is steering this sinking ship. Rinaldo returns and is gift wrapped a top six role. Vinny works his tail off and doesn't get moved off the 4th line.

I was really high on Berube through the summer. What a 180 this season has been.

That 4th line has been really good and has been a line that has provided offensive zone pressure, on the forecheck and cycled the puck well, and has scored how many goals in the last few weeks. In my opinion, it's perfectly understandable why he doesn't want to break that line up.

If Giroux doesn't play tonight, the lines are gonna be all kinds of (frank)ed up.

I still don't understand why Berube won't ever consider PEB for a top 9 role.

If G is out though you have slot guys up. What good is their having a really good fourth line when lines 1, 2 and 3 are patch worked?

We know my feelings on Berube, but it's hard to blame him for not splitting the "fourth" line. That line has been effective. Certainly the usage has helped, but they are taking advantage of it, so I get the hesitation to not change it

If anything, give that line more time. Maybe balance out the ice time for the other 3 lines after Giroux and Voracek.

True. If they could get a 1st for Coburn out of Calgary I'd be all over it. I like them a lot this year but they're the most likely first round exit of the bunch.
- hereticpride

Or fade and not make the the playoff and the pick is a lottery selection. If Calgary continues to stay on the playoff bubble, its the exact move i could see them making to bolster their chances.
