I can't say I'm a huge fan of 'dirty' but I sure do miss the days when the flyers were hated because they were a tough team to play against. This is a team that had the third most fighting majors last year...21st this year so far!

Teams used to hate playing against them because there was always a chance that someone had to answer the call. Fighting isn't hockey, but to me it shows a passion and sense of team/family that is clearly lacking on this season's team. Opponents' game plans this season (I'm sure) are a far cry from there preperations for the flyers from the last few seasons. I guarantee you teams in the A don't look forward to playing the Phantoms (or at least certain players don't) because you've got Mathers playing with his heart on his sleeve and sticking up for his teammates. This includes doing some of Stortini's work as well.

Last season Luke Schenn and Wayne Simmonds had 6 fighitng majors each and always seemed to be in the thick of the scrums. Simmmonds went on to amass 60 pts with his 106 PIMS - I don't think its coincedence! Where are these guys?!? SEAN EFFIN COUTURIER was the last flyer to drop the mitts back back on Dec. 2nd! Know who fought before him on the 26th of Nov?....wait for it....SEAN EFFIN COUTURIER!

If I was ANY Flyer who isn't on the first line, I'd be embarassed by ....

1- my 'enforcer' only has 3 fighting majors
2- guys who had 6 fights last year are on pace for 2
3- Sean Couturier has been our Go-To-Guy when things get ugly for the past month or so....

It was bad enough to watch teams win cups by playing 'traditional flyers' hockey' better than the flyers do...(Bruins, Hawks, Kings) (and by that I mean aggressive, hard-nosed play where 3 of 4 lines are a threat to hurt you on the score board AND 3 of 4 lines are a threat to harm you physically)! Now the Flyers don't even play 'flyers hockey' anymore.

Detroit, Chicago and Nashville are getting it done without much fighting. Having said that, they don't really have much to fight about. Of the 18 teams with 10 or more fighting majors in the league, only 5 are realistically out of the playoff picture (Buffalo, Edmonton, Arizona, Columbus and Ottawa)...the other 13 are fighting tooth and nail to get the job done. I don't see that type of spirit anywhere on the Philadelphia Flyers this season, and it sucks.

First of all, who are you? I don't think we've had the pleasure of speaking before.

Secondly, Schultz has been OK. It's two different topics. One has nothing to do with the other. Schultz has been good on some nights (Which you can see I'm giving him credit for) and not that great on other nights. We're still losing. The team could use the shake up at times. Players like Lecavalier, L.Schenn, Bellemare, MacDonald and Del Zotto have seen some sitting time. Heck, Luke Schenn didn't sit his last game because he's been playing poorly, he was sat because Berube wanted to get Del Zotto in. Berube should have wanted to get Del Zotto in, both Luke Schenn and Michael Del Zotto are still young player.

I've been a reader of Bill's for years and member of this site for a while, just rarely post. Read Bill's blogs every day and the comments from all of you, just usually stay quiet.

I think we see eye to eye on most of that, but I don't agree that taking out a solid 3rd pairing d-man in Schultz is the type of move to shake things up. But I do agree, they do need some sort of shake up. And same with Schenn. I think he's been playing well of late and even though I've wanted to see MDZ inserted back into the lineup, I didn't really want it to be at his expense but I also realize Berube isn't going to sit Grossmann. I guess I'd just rather see young guys like Schenn and MDZ sink or swim than older veterans who make the same mistakes. This D corps is just a mess.

In an effort to generate some serious discusssion on the team, what is everyone's single biggest concern with the team going forward? One issue only.

For me, it's how do they get the defense caught up to the where the forwards are, and bridge that 2-3 year gap that I think exists between the two.
I see that as the only real difficult obstacle to getting this team to where it needs to be.
While I feel that Lecavalier, Umberger and cap concerns are issues, I don't see them as huge obstacles that can keep this team down in the near future, and are issues that can be overcome.

Okay, so what's the problem? Why so bitter to a point where you've gotta comment around me but not to me? If it annoys you that I defend and support Lecavalier or other players the majority might be down on, isn't all of this sort of sad? By all means, make this make sense. That swat you speak up normally comes with tear, a reaction from you whipping your eyes.

sounds like Klinkhammer might be part of the return. So far, only hockey central has said this.

EDIT:
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Complete deal has Pitt sending a 1st in 2015 and Rob Klinkhammer to the Oilers for David Perron.

It's ok, we have Vinny and Umberger, so it's all good.

I agree. The forwards, with a couple additions, not really even major ones, could be contender-level next year or the year after. The defense still has a ways to go until Sanheim, Ghost, Morin, Hagg and/or others are not only ready to play in the NHL but be key contributors.

Good deal for Oilers. I am glad we didn't give a first for him. He would look good on G's line, but not for that price

In my opinion, if this current team had a legitimate top defense pair, they'd be one of the better teams in the League. Huge if though.

Crosby has 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 12 games playing with mostly role players, AHLers, and struggling NHLers so I'm really not surprised this move came when it did.

Especially because the Flyer's 1st pick is going to be much more valuable than Pitt's

So Paajarvi and a late 2014 second gets turned into 116GP and 76P out of Perron and a late 2015 1st?

I have to say that's pretty good asset management by the Oil.

They'd be top 10 most likely. Still have some holes up front but the defense would be balanced out a lot better with an anchor like Pietrangelo, Doughty, Weber, etc.
