I can agree with that. Playing the young guys should be the priority. The top 9 right now outside of Umberger is young.
- mickel25

And I'd put Umberger on the 4th line, too, and slide up Bellemare, myself.

That's really my big issue with playing Vinny now. I can't see a scenario where playing him in a bigger role increases his trade value, and the Flyers are pretty much at the point where development means more than getting wins.

That's very true.

Raffl (26)- Giroux (26)- Voracek (25)
Read (28) - Couturier (22) - Umberger (32)
BSchenn (23) - Laughton (20) - Simmonds (26)

It's not a well constructed roster, no argument.

I'm getting to the point where I want to see younger guys in key roles, because the playoff chances right now are near zero. After losing to Nashville, they pretty much needed to beat Arizona AND Colorado to have a chance.

They're 8 points back, without games in hand on most teams ahead of them(in fact some teams ahead of them have games in hand on them, like FLA & NYR) and have to leap frog 5 or 6 other teams to squeak into the playoffs.

Even a wildcard berth is not a likely outcome for this crew at this point.

Hextall should be selling any pieces who aren't viewed as part of the future. Stock pile draft picks, while shedding contracts and salary. That should be the main goal.

Hard to sell what no one is buying.

Hextall made that clear in a recent interview where he mentioned that no GM is anxious to take on contracts with significant term.

I think he's trying to sell pieces off.

Might be easier in a month or so. Teams separate a bit more, and have clearer paths to where they're going to end up.

Giroux should get dual US citizenship so he can go full on revenge mode and torch Canada if the NHL decides to allow players to participate in the next Olympics.

A buddy I work with posed a really interesting question yesterday. Jake has been killing it for the better part of three seasons. He is probably in the top 3 in wingers in the league.

What can that net you in a trade?

True. I wonder if he's still primarily focusing on moving guys like Vinny or Umberger as part of a deal and whether that will change as the TDL gets closer.

Yup. I wouldn't expect to see any trades until February at the earliest. Majority of deals will take please the week of the deadline. Teams know where they are at that point.

He can't. He's played for Canada in both the WJC and WC, so he's stuck being a Canadian, unless the IIHF changes rules.

I know. Unfortunately there are several albatrosses who they are stuck with. Don't get me started with Holmgren. 90% of his resume as Flyers GM is based on beating the Rags in a shootout. This would happen about 5 times out of 100.

I'd bet a poop load.

He's young, still has another season before he starts getting paid superstar level cash and he's not going to be a headache for a coach.

Jake would get you a ton at the draft. Trading him at the TDL would be selling low. Also, I would not trade him.

I wouldn't want to trade him, but it would depend on the return. He's going to get paid a ton. If he and Giroux are both making north of 8 million, it's difficult to fill out the rest of the roster. Not impossible, but certainly a challenge.

I think he can get rid of Coburn, Grossmann and Schultz pretty easily if he wanted to. Probably Luke Schenn as well. I fear he is stuck with VLC and Umberger. Everyone else should only be moved if you clearly win the trade. G, Voracek and Coots are the only three on the roster that I am completely opposed to trading.

If the Flyers coupled Jake and their first round pick (for argument sake say it's # 8) is that enough for them to get into the top 2?

The future cap is a big hold up as well. Just about everyone the Flyers have to sell have term left on their contract.

Absolutely. It's just a bit bigger for the average NCAA guy than it is for the average CHLer. Take a guy like Toews. There was really zero adjustment for him. He stepped in, scored 54 points in 64 games in his first NHL season and has been a stud ever since.

It all depends on the player, not the league, team, etc.

Probably not. The publicity around Eichel and McDavid is big enough that most fans know about them. Plus the teams at the top aren't going to be competing for a cup anytime soon so adding a guy like Voracek is more of a now move as opposed to a future one especially with a giant contract looming around the corner.

Why do people what to move Voracek? If you are talking return, Giroux would fetch more since he plays the valuable position of center.

I'd only trade Coburn and/or Streit for a stack of good assets. The rest, I'd be looking for 3rd rounders, maybe packaging another pick with them to get a second.

They really need to try and get picks for this draft. Even if they can't move guys like Schenn or Grossmann, they can still be used at next year's TDL to add picks then.

My untouchables are still Giroux & Voracek, with Couturier, Schenn & Simmonds following as next to untouchable at this point.
